A career as a STEM technician

Government plans to refocus the UK economy on high-tech, engineering and ‘knowledge-based’ industries can be seen as creating a wide variety of career opportunities for people of all educational backgrounds. Contrary to the common misconception that STEM jobs (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) are only accessible via university degrees, a new award launched by STEMNET and The Gatsby Charitable Foundation will profile rewarding and important technician careers in which success lies largely in vocational training.

Why Chemistry?

Chemistry is a unique science. All the other sciences investigate materials and matter, come to understand how they work, and discover their strengths and limitations in any different environment. Chemistry plays a part in these processes but more besides. It alone can create new molecules or material and it is this ability to synthesise that ensures it interfaces with every other science.

In fact it is the study of all materials and is vital to every aspect of your lives. From the moment you are born and throughout your life you are surrounded by chemistry; in the air you breathe, the food you eat and the clothes you wear.
