A network manager is responsible for an organisation's computer network system. A network is designed to give staff in an organisation access to files, documents, business applications, corporate systems, email and internet as well as printers and other devices.

Depending on the size and function of the organisation, there can be more than one network. Networks can be local, within a building, or can link nationally or internationally using satellite communications.

Computer hardware engineers design and develop computers and the computerised parts of other appliances. These include computer chips, circuit boards, displays, sensors, keyboards, modems, printers and test equipment. They are involved with the mechanical, electronic and electrical components of computers and computer systems such as processing units, memory and storage, data cabling and switching.

Web designers/developers are responsible for the design, layout and coding of a website. They are involved with the technical and graphic aspects of a website, how the site works and how it looks. They can also be involved with the maintenance and updating of an existing site.

Their role is a combination of computing expertise and creativity.

A business may rely on its site to sell products and services, to provide information or to get viewers to respond, so the job of the web designer/developer involves making the site as attractive, clear and easy to use as possible.

The role

Network Engineers work with computer networks, or communication systems. They create and install these systems, and also look after their maintenance.

These networks allow people and organisations to communicate and share information  with each other, and to provide services.

An IT Trainer is someone who specialises in teaching IT skills to clients. This could cover courses teaching the use of basic desktop programmes (such as Word and Powerpoint), right up to tutoring more technical aspects – programming, for instance.

Usual places of work include colleges, IT training companies and in large companies’ training departments. It is possible to be teaching either face to face or within a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

Our day to day lives are, and have been for the last few years, becoming increasingly dependent on computers and information communication technology (ICT). So many things we use contain computer chips and our free time is spent on computers gaming or on the internet. With all these facets of technology in our lives, there are numerous career paths available in this expanding industry.
