CAPEL MANOR COLLEGEGreen thinking? Love the outdoors? Looking for a rewarding career?
Now is a great time to enter one of the many diverse landbased industries! The importance of green spaces is becoming widely recognised, with many environmental concerns being addressed through investment in green spaces. A more environmentally aware public are demanding food and plants that have not been freighted huge distances. More people are catching the "grow your own" bug so there are increasing opportunities to produce fresh, healthy fruit and veg. Big projects such as the 2012 Olympics, Thames Gateway and the lottery-funded Living Landmarks will provide a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create inspiring landscapes on a vast scale.
Capel Manor College is London’s only specialist college for landbased studies with full-time and part-time courses in Animal Care and Saddlery, Countryside and Arboriculture, Floristry, Flower Arranging and Balloon Artistry, Horticulture and Landscaping, and Garden Design. We also offer short courses and apprenticeship schemes in some subjects. For a prospectus and full details of all of our courses see www.capel.ac.uk/prospectus/index.asp or call 08456 122122 or email enquiries@capel.ac.uk

Working in Horticulture is not just about gardening. There is a huge range of career and employment options in the commercial and environmental sectors as well as in research and journalism. Commercial Horticulture covers the production of ornamental plants, vegetables, salads, fruit and flowers. Amenity Horticulture helps to improve the quality of everyone's life, as horticulturists may advise, design or maintain private gardens or work to landscape, manage or maintain public parks, open spaces, roadside plantings or sports grounds. Capel Manor’s School of Horticulture has a strong tradition of quality provision and a team of specialist staff plus excellent facilities and resources. Capel Manor’s School of Garden Design has a well deserved national reputation for the quality of its training, with former students having developed successful design practices and stimulating careers working in the UK and abroad. Many have been featured in journals and books on garden design and a number have also designed gardens for TV series.
Careers in the countryside and the environment are broad and enable a sense of achievement in helping make the planet a better place to live. Opportunities for employment in Arboriculture (Tree surgery), Countryside and Conservation work continue to expand. Capel Manor College offers first-rate training sites including our own gardens and farm at the north London centre in Enfield, Horsenden Farm at the west London centre, nature reserves, country parks and private estates. Students attend field visits to a range of woodland, freshwater and grassland habitats, wildlife sites and urban greenspace.
Florists use creativity and knowledge of plants and flowers to design and assemble floral displays. Capel Manor’s School of Floristry has a national and international reputation for exceptional design skill and cutting edge creativity. The school became a Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) for Floristry and Business Enterprise in 2005, the only provider in England to achieve such recognition and has also been recognised as Grade 1 in three successive Ofsted inspections. The school’s achievements rest on high quality training, enabling students to develop skills and build businesses both in the UK and abroad.
To work with animals you need to have a good knowledge of animals, as well as be good working with people, have good communication skills, be good at record keeping and have stamina and patience. Whether applying for a job in a pet shop or for a place at university you need to be able to demonstrate enthusiasm, motivation and genuine interest in animals. Capel Manor is London's major provider of Animal Care courses and maintains a wide range of species of animals from exotics, popular pets and livestock providing students with hands on experience. The College also houses the only Saddlery School in the UK. Students learn to make saddles and harnesses - some have even gone on to work for the Queen. The Saddlery workshops at the College’s north London Enfield centre provide excellent practical facilities for production and maintenance of specialist leatherwork to very high standards.
If you’re looking for your next step after leaving school, coming to an open day gives you the opportunity to have a look around and meet current students to hear about their experiences. Capel Manor runs demonstration and activities at their open days so you can get to see the College working. Tutors are available to talk to and answer queries, as well as offer information and course advice. Open days take place twice a year in November and June, and take place at the North London centre in Enfield. There are also evening Advice Sessions that take place January to July at all centres. See www.capel.ac.uk/useful/advice_sessions.asp for dates and times.
