University of Wolverhamtpon - School of Applied Sciences

Posted on Tue, 11 October 2005 13:54:12

There are over 1,500 full and part-time Science undergraduate students at Wolverhampton, as well as over 200 taught Masters students. The huge range of courses reflects the School’s size and the expertise of its ninety or so academic teaching staff. The School has an international reputation for its teaching, and has received ‘Excellent’ ratings from the Quality Assurance Agency for the provision of many of its courses.

wolves_appsci01.jpgThe School has a dedicated IT suite of over a hundred fully networked PC work-stations for all Science students, and specialist facilities which support key areas such as Bioinformatics, Psychology, Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing.

In Biomedical Sciences and in Pharmacology, the diagnosis, understanding and treatment of human disease depends on high-quality laboratory-based analysis. Pharmacology, for example, looks at the science behind drugs and their effects on the body. Our new teaching laboratories are equipped for all of the specialist areas appropriate for learning and training. The new degree in Pharmacy will be starting in 2006.

In Physiology, students can specialise in such areas as cardiology, neurophysiology and respiratory physiology, and take advantage of our exercise physiology laboratory. Clinical Physiology is a professional course that includes hospital work placement.

The Biology and Ecology laboratories have also recently been refurbished and are state-of-the-art. Our crop research centre, for example, includes greenhouse facilities and environmentally controlled growth cabinets. Food quality (including safety) and the production of fermented foods such as ale and yoghurt are part of the Food Biology degree. Fieldwork is an integral part of the Ecology programme.

wolves_appsci02.jpgUp to date facilities are also available in Forensic Science, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. A ‘scene of crime’ room, for instance, provides opportunities for students to identify and analyse a set of clues as part of their training in Forensic Science. Molecular Biology includes the exciting new field of Bioinformatics.

In Geography and Environmental Science we have a hydrological process lab and instrumentation for water quality analysis, facilities for sediment and rock sample analysis, and large mineral, rock and microfossil collections. There is a wide range of survey and geophysical equipment, and meteorological data is acquired using automatic weather stations. Three local field stations allow investigation into soil erosion.

A multi-million pound investment programme for Psychology has provided state-of-the-art laboratories, considered to be among the best in the UK. The Social and Developmental Psychology lab is equipped for video work with children; a Counselling Psychology suite supports group work and video-based skills training; and Cognitive and Experimental Psychology has specialist rooms for work involving memory, cognition and reasoning.
