Posted on Mon, 07 November 2005 16:04:29
The world of IT is constantly changing and evolving in line with today’s fast-paced society.
At the School of Computing and Information Technology, students can be sure they are being kept up to speed. With an excellent reputation for high-quality vocational courses, the School is at the forefront of education, training, consultancy and research.
For almost 40 years the School has been providing practical and challenging courses, with more than 50 members of staff currently dedicated to helping students achieve their goals.
The School was one of the first places to offer a BSc in Computer Science and continues to pioneer courses. The course in Computer Science (Games Development) introduced a few years ago has proved very popular; Computer Games is a huge market growth area.
This year we have introduced a new award in IT Management, this combines knowledge of computing and business with development of skills to manage IT in an organisation, project management and strategic information systems management.
Other specialist areas include the Internet and Worldwide Web, Graphics, Software Development and Artificial Intelligence. Mathematical Sciences and Statistical Sciences are also an important part of the School and many combined course options are available.
A new IT complex at the heart of the Wolverhampton City Campus will receive its first students in September. The new complex has already received critical acclaim and consists of 5,600m² of computer labs, office space, technical support facilities and meeting rooms. When completed, the University will have the largest wireless network within a higher education establishment in the UK.
The development centralises the University's IT work in a specialist area, providing computers for students as well as areas for research and for IT consultancy for companies in the region.
As well as general-purpose computer labs, it will house multimedia, networking, research and development as well as labs to support the University’s flourishing consultancy activities, including IT Futures Centre consultancy team. PCs will be of high specification and will take advantage of such technologies as Wi-Fi.
IT suites will provide an extensive range of software to provide practical experience and support specialist study, links to the University’s network providing access to more powerful machines, the University’s Virtual Learning Environment and, of course, the Internet.
With excellent facilities and highly skilled staff, the School of Computing and Information Technology can give students’ modern tuition and guidance to help them achieve their career goals.
