University of Derby Buxton - A World of Opportunity
Posted on Tue, 11 October 2005 13:36:04
Following a £20m refurbishment, the long-awaited Devonshire Royal Campus at The University of Derby Buxton is now fully operational. The inspiring Grade II* listed building sits majestically in the centre of the town acting as a beacon to education and training opportunities, especially in hospitality and catering. The Institute of Hospitality and Tourism Studies provides among the very best facilities available anywhere in the UK. All kitchens are equipped to the highest restaurant standards. Technology also plays a key part with some areas having video recording equipment, DVD and internet feeds, which provide an exciting way of learning for for budding chefs.
There are seven kitchens in total: in addition to the training areas there is an International & Development Kitchen; a wonderfully appointed Pastry & Bakery Kitchen; a specialist Larder Preparation Kitchen and a Cookery Demonstration Theatre. Then there is the main Production Kitchen which services the fine dining restaurant. This is an amazing experience as half the kitchen is situated in the restaurant, providing a visual cookery theatre where guests can observe their food being prepared.
Hospitality students can train in the fine dining restaurant which sits around one hundred covers. The restaurant has a contemporary feel and this is reflected in the style of food served. Dishes range from modern British and European, through to international specialities. Other facilities include a Bistro and fast food unit.
In addition to catering and hospitality expertise, students, the public and visitors to Buxton will also benefit from new Hair and Beauty salons complemented by an excellent Spa facility. The BSc (Hons) in International Spa Management is the only one of its kind and is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge to pursue a career in Beauty, Health and Spa Management. Studied over fours years, it includes a one-year work placement at one of a number of associated spa destinations around the UK and across the world.
As our programmes develop at the historic Devonshire Royal Campus - offering the combination of state-of-the-art facilities, an expanded range of courses, flexibility of entry and progression and combined with a wealth of staff experience and strong links with leaders in one of the hottest industries around - this has got to be the place to study!
