Our School is committed to the development and delivery of high quality nursing, midwifery and ODP education programmes at both pre-registration and post-registration levels. We have a strong team of lecturers and support staff whose aim is to offer students excellent opportunities to develop personally, professionally and academically. By so doing, we aim to equip our students with the skills and knowledge necessary to meet the current and future health care needs of the population.

Our School has strong links with partners in local healthcare provision and our teaching facilities are situated in the Clinical Education Centre on the site of the University Hospital of North Staffordshire (UHNS) in Stoke on Trent. These facilities include classrooms, lecture theatres, seminar rooms, a fully-equipped computer suite, an IT training room, two clinical skills laboratories, a world-class health library, a student common room and office accommodation.

Adult nursing offers the opportunity to care for sick and injured adults and to nurse them back to health in both hospital and community settings.  As well as considering people’s physical problems, adult nurses must meet individuals’ psychological needs. Whether working in a hospital, a clinic, the community or in people’s homes, no two days are the same and every day poses new and interesting challenges. Nurses are often the co-ordinators of care that may be delivered by doctors, physiotherapists, dieticians, occupational therapists and many others. Studying adult nursing prepares you to deal with these challenges to enable you to deliver patient-centred care in an ever changing health care arena.

Children’s Nursing

The well being of the child and their family is fundamental to Children’s nurses. Whether children need care in hospital, in the community or in their home, Children’s nurses face the challenge of meeting a range of needs from those requiring a rapid response with sophisticated technical skills to those who have long-term needs.

Caring for children is demanding and Children’s nurses need to be inquisitive, astute and adaptable whilst forming partnerships with parents and children to promote the optimum care and support needed in any care setting.

Learning Disability Nursing

Ever thought about gaining a qualification that enables you to develop a career that is challenging, different every day and rewarding? If so, have you considered a career in Learning Disability nursing?

Being a Learning Disabilities nurse is not just about gaining a qualification and having satisfaction in your job, it’s also about “helping to make a difference to ensure that people with learning disabilities are given real choices and are supported in living as active citizens in the community” (February 2003 students).

Amongst the adult population, one person in every six is said to suffer from some form of mental illness. Mental health nurses are an integral part of the team of psychiatrists, GPs, social workers and carers that co-ordinate and provide support to these individuals. Over recent years, the provision of mental health care has moved from hospitals to the community and, hence, mental health nurses now work in people's homes, in small residential units, and in local health centres. These nurses have the knowledge and skills to act autonomously in planning and delivering care, as well as being a fundamental component in a multi-professional team.
