The West of England

Posted on Fri, 05 January 2007 12:27:18

The West of England is home to some of the country’s leading universities and colleges with more than 40,000 students in the area; it also has some of the most spectacular countryside in Britain. Here we look at Bath and Bristol, both student friendly places and easy to get to from anywhere in the west.

w_england01_175Bath is a spectacularly beautiful city which stands on the River Avon. The city’s compactness and striking architecture - Roman baths and sweeping Georgian terraces  combine to produce one of the most elegant sights in Europe. But Bath is not just a collection of historical curiosities; it is a wonderful and vibrant city with an artistic and cultural life rivalling the best in the world. Street life is fresh and fun with the city's floral bedecked streets and buildings providing a perfect backdrop for some of the liveliest and original street theatre you are likely to find anywhere. There is plenty to do at night with a thriving pub and club scene and if you fancy a change of scene, London is approximately one hour and a quarter from Bath by train http://www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk/travelinfo/fgwtimetables.php, and Bristol is just fifteen minutes away.

Bristol is a multicultural city that has a lively bar scene benefiting from European-style licensing laws. As well as festivals and carnivals, architecture and park land, business and new technology, theatres and museums, artists and animators, music and film, it has been officially designated a 'Centre of Culture' by the Government.

Lovers of landscape here are spoilt for choice. The Avon Gorge and surrounding hills provide a magnificent setting for Bristol, and at every point of the compass, stunning countryside is only a short journey away.

Bristol's shopping offers lots of choice, catering for the most eclectic of tastes and all budgets from student budgets to big spenders.

Students here enjoy all the perks of life in the largest, most diverse city in the south-west.
