The Technology of Music
Students of the BA(Hons) Popular Music with Music Technology programme at the University of Derby continue to undertake high profile commercial music activities and significant community based music events. Recent work includes involvement with the recording, production, licensing and distribution of a charitable CD to promote awareness of and raise funds for the Adrian Johnson Memorial Trust, established in the wake of the terrible events in London on the 7th July 2005. The Rose by Amanda McBroom was performed by Adrian’s widow Cathey Johnson and the recording has stimulated national and international support through charitable donations to the trust. Work for this valuable initiative continues and students are currently working towards the production of an album and the staging of a benefit concert. Further details can be found at www.adrianjohnsontrust.co.uk
Success has also been achieved in nationally recognised music competitions such as the Musician’s Benevolent Fund Song Creation Competition. Popular Music student Anthony David was recently elected for institutional nomination for this competition and subsequently won through to the prestigious final concert event at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts. Receiving commendations for his song writing abilities, the event provided an important networking opportunity with which Anthony could establish connections with the music industry before making his way out into the professional environment. Having enjoyed considerable success with his first commercial album, Anthony is now working on new material and establishing himself on the live music circuit across the UK.
Electronics & Sound of the Faculty of Arts, Design & Technology at The University of Derby supports a wide range of activity from electrical engineering through to multimedia production, music composition and performance. In addition to the BA(Hons) Popular Music with Music Technology, other performing arts technology based programmes delivered within this subject group include BSc(Hons) Multimedia Technology & Music Production, BSc(Hons) Music
Technology & Audio System Design and BSc(Hons) Sound, Light & Live Event Technology.
