Studying In London
Posted on Wed, 09 November 2005 09:44:08
For several centuries, London has been a great place to study, and has always attracted people from all over the world. As well as all our home grown students, London attracts over 65 000 international students to the capital each year – more than any other city, including New York and Sydney. London is one of the most cosmopolitan places in the world. Over 300 languages are spoken in this very city.
London has taken centre stage as a wildly fashionable and unconventional city. Newsweek dubbed it the "coolest city on the planet." With its art galleries, museums, theatres, and libraries, London has always been one of the great cultural centres of the world - but now it is making the news with its clubs, fashion, restaurants, shops, and people.
By choosing to study and live in the largest city in Western Europe students can benefit from a number of advantages. Aside from the vast range of social and entertainment facilities on offer, London plays a major part in their academic life as well. London has the greatest concentration of libraries, museums, archives and professional bodies in Europe, where, for example, history students may well find themselves looking at primary-source material as part of their studies.
In many respects London need be no more expensive than any other university town or city and London students have the advantage of there being more part time work available, employers know students make good part-time employees, being intelligent, flexible and quick to learn. With a little money to spend you have the pick of theatre, cinema, opera, ballet,
music, sport and nightlife. Lots of things in London are free of charge. Visit an art gallery, go for a stroll in one of the Royal Parks, take in the sights or window shop. You can use a student card to qualify for cheaper tickets for shows and exhibitions, or go to a film on a cheap night. .
Above all, when it comes to entering the careers market on graduating, London graduates start with a real advantage with so many of the country's major employers in the worlds of finance, business, media and communications on their doorstep
