BSc (Hons) Human Sciences: Pre-medical Option
The Pre-medical Option at Thames Valley University (TVU) offers a new route into medicine at Imperial College London. This Option aims to widen access into the medical profession and is intended for students (Home and EU) who have the potential to study medicine but due to socio-economic reasons have not yet had the opportunity to fulfill this potential. This course is inappropriate for those who already hold a degree.
What will I study?
The Pre-medical Option is a one year course and you will undertake modules from Biology, Chemistry, Medical Physics, Mathematics, Anatomy and Physiology.
How long will I study for?
All medical students at Imperial are required to study for six years on the MBBS and BSc intercalated degree (A100). It is proposed that a limited number of TVU students may transfer into the first year of the medical course at Imperial after successful completion of the Pre-medical Option at TVU, so you would study for a total of seven years.
For entry to the first year of the MBBS/BSc medical degree at Imperial, you must complete a Criminal Records Bureau check before being accepted as a medical student. Students applying to Imperial will need to take the BioMedical Admissions Test (BMAT) to be considered for interview. More information can be found at www.bmat .org.uk.
What can I expect from the Option?
The Pre-medical Option is a gateway for a limited number of TVU students to study medicine at Imperial. You will have the opportunity to attend an Open Day at Imperial and meet staff and students, as well as visit hospital wards and shadow health professionals. The Option also includes extensive preparation in transferable skills such as teamwork, communication, presentation techniques and interviewing strategies. Alternatively, if you complete the Pre-medical Option you will be able to continue with your studies on the BSc (Hons) Human Sciences at TVU. The opportunity to transfer to another course at TVU will be considered.
