If you choose to come to Queen’s University Belfast in 2008 you will be making a little piece of history – for you will be joining the University during its centenary year.

Queen’s puts its students first, and every new intake of undergraduates is special, but the Class of 2008 will hold a unique place in the story of the University as it celebrates 100 years as a leader in higher education and looks towards an even brighter future.

Coinciding with the centenary, Queen’s is investing £200,000 in a major new scholarship scheme to attract high-quality students from throughout the United Kingdom, Ireland and other member states of the European Union. The scheme, for undergraduates starting their studies in 2008, includes Travel Scholarships of £600 to students from Great Britain and Europe achieving three grade As at A-level.

The programme also offers scholarships for students achieving A grades or equivalent in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects, expands the current A-level entrance scholarship scheme and includes three Queen’s Centenary Gold Medal Entrance Scholarships of £7,500.

The University’s centenary celebrations follow one of the most significant years in its history. In November 2006 Queen’s became the first university to be invited to join the Russell Group of leading United Kingdom universities since the association was set up in 1994. This was excellent news for the University and excellent news for its students, underpinning Queen’s international academic reputation and adding value to degrees which are already highly regarded around the world.

As a student-centred university, Queen’s is committed to ensuring that all its graduates are equipped with the best skills to benefit their future lives and careers.

As it celebrates its centenary, this is truer than ever, with the University currently investing more than £250 million in staff, students and facilities. Major projects include the £45 million Sir Anthony O’Reilly Library, due to open in 2009, and the £45 million Elms Student Village, which is nearing completion.

Queen’s offers some of the best student facilities in the United Kingdom. A £9 million refurbishment to the Students’ Union was marked by a celebration featuring anti-poverty campaigner and musician Bob Geldof in March 2007. The previous month Double Olympic Gold Medallist Dame Kelly Holmes officially opened a £7 million new sports facility at the University’s Physical Education Centre. Dame Kelly described the facilities as “absolutely amazing” and “fantastic for students and the local community”.

And a purpose-built £3 million Student Guidance Centre, bringing together the University’s student services into a single point of contact, opened in August 2007.

Queen’s has more than 150 clubs and societies for students to choose from and the Students' Union is the hub of student life, with a host of services and facilities. It is also home to one of the liveliest club venues in the United Kingdom, Shine.

Among those who enjoyed the Queen’s experience is graduate BBC Five Live and Radio Ulster presenter Stephen Nolan, winner of seven Gold Sony Awards.

He described his time at the University as “magical” and said: “I got so much out of my time at Queen’s. The freedom you have at university is precious and everyone needs to make their own way in life but I think it’s important to remind people that taking the opportunity to go to a university like Queen’s has the potential to set the rest of their lives in an incredible direction, if they just put a bit of effort in.”

One of the most striking aspects of Queen's is the breadth of its academic profile which covers a wide range of disciplines, from medicine, law and engineering to the humanities, social sciences, science and agriculture.

In recent years it has emerged as a major player on the international research scene in areas ranging from cancer studies to climate change, from wireless technology to poetry and from pharmaceuticals to sonic arts.

Belfast, which has been described as one of Europe's friendliest – and trendiest – regional capitals, is very easy to get to from other parts of the United Kingdom and Europe. It has a modern transport infrastructure with three airports and daily flights to British and major European destinations.

Given alumni have made their mark in many spheres of life. They include two Nobel Prize winners, poet Seamus Heaney and Northern Ireland’s former First Minister, David Trimble.

Other famous alumni are President of Ireland Mary McAleese, TV presenter Nick Ross, entertainer Patrick Kielty, Everest mountaineer Dawson Stelfox, Blue Peter presenter Zoe Salmon, award-winning actor Simon Callow, musician Phil Coulter, and the late Professor Frank Pantridge, who developed the mobile coronary care unit.
