Go East! - Discover some of the best Universities
Posted on Thu, 15 November 2007 12:43:20
We’re not talking exotic far flung shores when recommending you consider an eastern adventure…more suggesting that you sample what the UK’s eastern towns have to offer when thinking about your uni choices. The East Midlands and East Anglia are home to some of the best universities in the country and it’s fair to say they have the nightlife to match. With some of the best pubs and clubs in the UK, it’s no wonder thousands of students every year choose to go East!

Cambridge
According to the myths surrounding Cambridge you might believe that students either spend 3 years going to nightly champagne fuelled black-tie dinners or that they spend 24 hours a day in the library – although you might find yourself doing this on occasion, there’s a lot more to Cambridge than the stereotypes might portray!
Vibrant and exciting, Cambridge has plenty of nightlife to cater for every student’s taste. There are plenty of pubs, nightclubs and live music venues including the Cambridge Corn Exchange, which has recently played host to cheesy student favourites The Proclaimers, in addition to CSS and the Sugababes who have also chosen the Corn Exchange as a venue of choice.
If live music is your thing, The Junction is perfect. Located a bit further out of the centre of Cambridge, this venue is a popular choice with students and recent highlights include appearances from Scouting for Girls and Ocean Colour Scene. The Junction also runs popular club nights for students.
Although many of the nightclubs in Cambridge are predominantly cheese-fuelled affairs, you can rely on the regular weekly student nights to provide a fun night out!
In the fame ratings, Cambridge fares pretty well…past students of the city include Charles Darwin, Prince Charles and even Mr Bean to mention just a few!
Norwich
Actor and writer Stephen Fry once summed up Norwich as 'A fine city. None finer.' And maybe he had a point.
For students, Norwich is a fantastic place to be, with a vibrant nightlife to rival some of its larger counterparts. There are numerous bars and clubs open late into the night (or early morning!) and that’s not mentioning the widely acclaimed Student Union at the University of East Anglia.
The Waterfront, which is run be UEA students regularly features top DJ’s and live bands and in recent years has seen the likes of Amy Winehouse, Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand grace the stage.
The Student Union itself, organises regular weekly themed nights and offers more than 60 gigs on campus each year! (Quite impressive hey?) Last year's gigs included Supergrass, Athlete, Bloc Party and even Motorhead!
Away from campus, the popular Riverside complex provides top a selection of great bars including Norwegian Blue along with several nightclubs so you can get your dancing feet on! Tombland is home to more stylish bars, while there are a whole host of homely pubs such as the Belgian Monk.
Comedians Paul Whitehouse and Eddie Izzard all studied in Norwich but the most famous name connected with the city is probably celebrity cook Delia Smith, the majority shareholder in Norwich City Football Club. Her enthusiastic support for the Canaries has made her Norwich’s favourite adopted daughter!
Lincoln
Lincoln is a growing university town and an eclectic mix of old and new - all you could wish for in a student city. Although it may not be perceived as party capital of the UK, those who choose to study there may beg to differ! Lincoln has more than enough bars, clubs and pubs to keep the student population happy and the Student Union bar at Lincoln uni, ‘The Engine Shed’ is the largest live music venue in Lincoln.
Lincoln's nightlife improves year on year, with the nightlife buzzing as the influx of new students grows. The university's £6 million Engine Shed provides entertainment ranging from playing host to well-known bands such as Embrace, The Zutons, Ian Brown and The Stereophonics, to club nights and formal balls.
Other bands that have played at the Engine Shed include The Charlatans, The Damned, Babyshambles, Dirty Pretty Things and many more.
There is an eclectic mix of bars in the city centre and the picturesque Bailgate area is also worth a visit. Popular nightclubs in Lincoln include Scream, Sakura and The Cell.
At the Quayside located Scream you can expect a selection of indie, electro, funk, 60's, hip hop, reggae and drum and bass. Sakura is a fairly new nightclub to hit Lincoln, and has a funky Japanese theme. Guaranteeing a great night, Sakura provides a diverse mix of modern beats. Hosting two student nights weekly, Sakura plays classic student anthems, with great drinks offers!
The Cell regularly hosts live bands and is home to the most popular mid week indie night in Lincoln. The Cell is also good for Drum and Bass and Dance with the likes of Judge Jules, Fergie, Annie Mac, Grooverider and Lisa Lashes to name but a few, all gracing the decks at The Cell.
If it’s a fun night out you’re after, with enough change left for your next night out, try chain bar Vodka Revolution on the High Street. The Falcon is also another popular bar to consider on your travels.
To continue with the celebrity theme, Isaac Newton is from Lincolnshire, as well as Margaret Thatcher and even Sharon from Eastenders! (Ok. So we struggled with Lincoln a bit!)
