Enhance Your Future at Queens University Belfast

Posted on Tue, 11 October 2005 09:28:06

The School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Queen’s University Belfast has achieved an “Excellent” rating in recent teaching quality assessment, while also achieving the highest possible rating at 5* over the last 10 years in the national Research Assessment Exercises (RAE).

queens_aero01.jpgUndergraduate courses offered are: BEng/MEng in Aeronautical Engineering, BEng in Mechanical Engineering, BEng in Manufacturing Engineering, MEng in Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering and BEng/MEng in Product Design & Development. The engineering courses are accredited by the relevant professional bodies and are highly relevant to industrial needs, benefiting from significant industrial input. These courses are highly vocational with 80% of graduates gaining local, national or international employment within 6 months of completing their degrees. Many of the courses have an option for a year spent working in industry.

The School offers a unique range of wide opportunities to travel as an integral part of the degree courses.  The IAESTE and Erasmus schemes encourage both industrial and academic placement during the summer and academic year respectfully, while the BEI exchange places students for 1 year in America.

queens_aero04.jpgThe School also participates in the TIME degree programme where a student gains a Double Degree through 2 years additional study at a European university.  For example, the first TIME graduate within the UK graduated in 2005 from Aeronautical Engineering at QUB, while a second Aero student began his international placement this year in École Centrale Paris.

The School is playing an important role in the development of engineering education as a leading member of an international body called the CDIO Consortium, having been invited to join the four founding members of the Consortium two years ago. It now includes schools from the USA, Canada, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, England, Singapore, N. Zealand and S. Africa. The School has now been awarded funding as a Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (NI) and has received support for innovation in engineering education from the Higher Education Academy.

queens_aero06.jpgExposure to international enterprises is an integral part of the courses.  For example, Aeronautical Engineering students participate in a joint international design project with the Technical University of Delft, Holland; including several weeks spent at Delft for the Belfast team and vice-versa for the Delft team. Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering students can study for the last year at Chalmers in Sweden.

Some of the other special opportunities offered through study at the School include: flying courses held at Belfast International Airport for Aeronautical students; participation in the Formula Student competition that challenges teams of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering students to conceive, design, manufacture and compete in a small single-seater racing car; participation in ‘Investment Belfast’s £25k Awards’ which encourages students to focus their studies on business solutions.
