Nottingham - Forget the Bad Press

Posted on Mon, 19 November 2007 12:46:49

Nottingham’s social life is second to none. The city enjoys a legendary club scene and much of the action happens within the rejuvenated Lace Market and Hockley area where new venues like Bluu, Brass Monkey and Dogma have evolved. If you fancy a giggle try Jongleurs where contemporary comedy nights can be found. If live music is your bag, the renowned Rock City brings in top acts including Groove Armada, Maximo Park and Lily Allen. The Social is a favourite spot with students and impressively has already showcased bands like The Strokes and White Stripes. If you’d rather retreat from the masses, The Loft is a groovy outpost on the bohemian Mansfield Road, and Moog is an unpretentious-yet hip bar in student friendly Radford.

Nottingham has its good and bad areas just like anywhere else, and no-one with any sense walks alone in a dubious area. But you wouldn’t anywhere would you? Personal safety rules apply wherever you live, both out and about and in your accommodation.

The city centre, only a short bus or bike ride from the two universities’ main campuses, has everything you’ll ever need i.e. pubs, clubs, shops and all within walking distance of each other. Unsurprisingly, over recent years Nottingham has been consistently voted one of the UK's premier shopping destinations. The city features all the big names you would expect, alongside individual boutiques and exclusive designers.

There are numerous multi-screen cinemas in Nottingham and for the more cultural among you, try The Broadway Cinema, the only regional cinema affiliated to the National Film Theatre, which held the British premiere of Reservoir Dogs.

Whether you enjoy eating out, sport, cinema, art galleries, libraries, clubbing, museums, pubs, comedy clubs or theatres, Nottingham will have something for you.

As a student, you’ll never be bored in Nottingham and a relatively low cost of living will help you enjoy yourself. All in all it’s a great city in which to study.
