Take the Gap Year Challenge
Posted on Mon, 19 July 2004 12:08:55
Now is the time of year when many 15-18 year olds start thinking about a gap year and the opportunities it may hold for them, and they need to know the merits of the various options open to them.
One of these options is the AYUSA Academic Year in the USA programme, which Challenge Educational Services, as a well established supplier of high quality, educational exchange programmes for over 16 years, takes pride in recommending unreservedly.
4 good reasons for taking part in the AYUSA programme
• A unique opportunity to improve academic knowledge and develop sporting skills
• First hand experience of the American way of life, culture and educational system
• The chance to develop independence and confidence, flexibility and adaptability to new situations
• A wide range of core subjects and extra-curricular activities
Accommodation is arranged on a full-board basis with an American host family and local representation and support is offered by fully trained field staff, ensuring total peace of mind for students and their parents.

![]() "From the moment I walked through the doors at Philadelphia Airport I was greeted with gifts, a welcome sign and lots of smiles. I knew I had made the right decision. While living in the States as an Exchange student, there are many things you have to consider. Being independent, you must learn to handle your finances - there is just so much you want to buy! Of course the year is not just all play. You must achieve good grades in High School, obey all the rules and participate in community service. Being part of the family, you do the chores along with everyone else in the house - the whole family was so good to me, I felt it was the least I could do to help. The homesickness is pretty inevitable, but the host family and community staff were really supportive and always there when I needed to talk. My advice is to stay positive, look on the bright side and keep a busy schedule! Do try to get the most out of your stay - build new relationships and see as much of the USA as you can. I would recommend this Academic Year to anyone ! It is truly incredible to be able to learn so much and have so much fun at the same time." Kirsty Shaw |
![]() Letter received from parents of Robert Reed, who went on the AyUSA Academic year in the USA Programme from August 2001 to June 2002: "Dear Theresa, ......... Robert is home now and had a great time. We had a good stay with the host family in May. They were really good to us and we had some laughs. They are thinking about coming over next year - so we are busy decorating! It's a great experience for young people and really opens up their eyes to the outside ...... Thanks for all your help, Best wishes, Chris and Ron Reed |
