Why study Retail at degree level ?

Retail is one of the fastest growing and developing sectors of the British economy. It is a very varied activity and embraces a wide range of organisations, including shops, department stores, supermarkets and warehouses, as well as selling on the internet and by mail-order.

Oxford Brookes is one of the few universities to specialise in this subject - and they have experts in the field who will show you how to 'talk the talk, and walk the walk'. The University has maximum marks for its 'Business and Economics' subjects from the Quality Assurance Agency.

Working within retail is varied, and includes store operations, strategic management, property development, shop design, human resources, and marketing. There's plenty to learn and many different areas you can specialise in. This means anyone with a good degree in retail should have a head start when it comes to getting a top job in this rapidly changing sector.

Universities vary in terms of degree programmes offered in Retailing. At Brookes there are both Single and Joint Honours degrees. In a Joint Honours degree, Retailing would be combined with another subject eg Marketing. Single Honours degrees may have the option of a one year work placement before the 2nd or, in the case of Brookes, the final year of a degree. Oxford Brookes has been fortunate in being able to help students find placements in the major Retailing organisations including Aldi, Boots and Debenhams.

Students organise a Retail Society which organises an annual Retail Conference where students and their employers present the results of the work placement experience year to students seeking placements for the following year. In this way Oxford Brookes has built up excellent relations with many leading organisations not only useful for placements and subsequent career openings, which often include graduate management recruitment schemes.

Wherever possible Oxford Brookes tries to add professional accreditation, students at Brookes may also qualify for the Diploma in Logistics awarded by the Institute of Logistics and Transport.

The employability of Brookes' graduates is extremely high and some 20% also progress to postgraduate study. In 2002 The Sunday Times ranked Oxford Brookes 8th overall for the employability of its graduates.
