Modelling a career

Select is one of the most successful modelling agencies in the world and is currently Britain's number one. Since doing Model Behaviour 2 and clothes Show Live in Birmingham, Select has become a household name in the UK. Modelling is a sought after career and is only accessible to a fortunate few. Success in this area can be from one extreme to the other.

As an agency we are always looking for fresh and exciting new looks for our world-renowned new faces division. Select Bookers look after the careers of all the models and have started the careers of some of the biggest names in the business: Helena Christensen, Stella Tennant, Jayne Windsor, Jenna Fisher, Lisa Ratliffe, James Penfold and James Gooding to name a few.

Select work with the most prestigious clients in the fashion industry and the successful models have done campaign after campaign in high gloss magazines such as Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire and many more. They also get the opportunity to travel to do catwalk shows in Milan, Paris and New York.

Select scouts travel around the UK and internationally, looking for new talent to sign up to their books. On average select represent around 200 girls and 100 boys. Each and every model works differently depending on their look combined with the current trends in fashion.

A day in the life of  typical model would start at 10 o’clock. The girl’s day would be full of castings, which involve travelling around London meeting clients for up and coming jobs. Each model will be up against models from Select and other agencies around London. For them to get the job they must have the specific look the client is looking for. Generally a model would go to about 10 castings a day and this can be very tiring and stressful, especially if they do not get any of the jobs.[!--pagebreak--]

 It is a very competitive business but the results can be very rewarding. Some of the girl’s work solidly, however others will have waves of success depending on their look and the trend in fashion at that time.

You have to have the determination and commitment to be a successful model and prepared to put in long hours. Models also have to look after themselves making sure they stay healthy, eat sensibly and exercise regularly. Full time models must be prepared to be available most of the time throughout the week and most weekends. They also need to be able to get up and fly across the world in a day’s notice or less.

 Models spend weeks or even months away from home in a strange country. This can be very exciting seeing new places but can also be very lonely at times. Like all jobs there are good times and bad. The Glamorous side of this industry only becomes apparent after the hard work has been put in.
