Career Profile of a Police Constable
West Midlands Police is the most progressive Force in England.Serving an incredibly diverse community we currently employ 8,000 Police Officers,650 Special Constables and 3000 Support Staff who occupy roles within a range of different departments such as Press and PR,Finance,Call Centre,Accountancy,Crime Bureau, Fingerprints, Force Intelligence,Legal Services,Personnel, Scenes of Crime and Transport.

Qualifications and Skills Required
Police Constables and Special Constables:
Applicants should be able to demonstrate a good standard of education and will be required to pass a stringent selection procedure,however formal qualifications are not essential.Applicants must be 18 years or over.
Salary (Police Constable only)
£18,264 rising to £20,436 after 30 weeks training.
Training and Development
Police Constable:
Successful applicants will be required to undertake 15 weeks of residential training at any one of the National Police Training Centres in the UK.They will then spend the remainder of their 2 year probationary period training at the Operational Command Unit (Station) they have been assigned to.
Special Constable:
Successful applicants will be required to attend 3 consecutive weekend training sessions.This includes Administration,Health and Safety and basic Law.The remainder of their training will be delivered via your duty shifts. Special Constables can choose which station they would like to work from.
Fast Track Scheme (Police Constable Only)
Once you have completed 12 months of the probationary period, police officers can then opt to
apply for the High Potential Development Scheme (HPDS).This is a fast-track scheme for outstanding individuals who possess the skills to accelerate through the police ranks. Candidates on this scheme can expect to be promoted to the rank of Inspector within 5 years (Current salary £36,084). An integral part of this scheme is academic development. Candidates will undergo individually tailored academic development, taking account of any qualifications you have already achieved. All you learn in the academic arena has to link to your leadership skills,which will be sharpened and developed through practical experience in the workplace
