Army education and career opportunities
Fast moving and action packed – an Army education is like no other. Offering a range of further education opportunities from NVQs and modern apprenticeships to diplomas and degrees, the Army has something for all educational standards and abilities.
And with an unbeatable mix of training and qualifications, adventure and sport, an army education means that students emerge with life-long transferable skills and qualifications that are second to none.
Further Education with the Army provides a platform of skills and nationally recognised qualifications - NVQs, SVQs, BTECs and HNDs, as well as degree qualifications - while training first class soldiers who will quickly earn promotion. And combined with the management and leadership skills acquired through training and experiences, soldiers are strongly placed for civilian jobs beyond Army life.
The Army Foundation College (AFC) in Harrogate and Army Technical Foundation College (ATFC) near Reading offer courses to train students for both combat and technical units whilst undertaking further education at the same time. Basic training includes weapon-handling, fieldcraft, leadership and teamwork, with a combination of technical studies at the ATFC. Working towards Level 2 in National Vocational Qualifications and Scottish Vocational Qualifications, Army education and training can also lead on to Modern Apprenticeships.
Alternatively, the Army Development Course in Bassingbourn is designed for those who want to get a head start in their Army careers. In addition to military skills, sports and adventure training, it also builds vocational skills such as IT and communications, problem solving and teamwork, through community based projects.
Further education with qualifications to last a lifetime For those wishing to gain A levels and join the Army as an officer and technical specialist, the Army’s Welbeck College is a sixth form college offering students high quality education to achieve A level grades that lead on to optional degree study in a technical subject.
The Army offers a vast range of job opportunities from combat soldiers to engineers, avionics technician, missile operators, helicopter pilots, communication specialists, HGV drivers, military policemen, intelligence specialists, paramedics, PT instructors and many more. You can even join the Army to become a professional chef or to play the pipes and drums.
Army job opportunities can be divided into 9 Career Groups reflecting virtually every job that may be found in civilian life. Naturally Combat and Officers feature among the 9 Career Groups, but the other seven have strong resonance with civilian groupings. They are Engineering, Logistics, IT/Communications, Healthcare, HR/Admin and Finance, Specialist Careers and Further Education.
Ongoing training and education includes the development of essential military skills - including the use of high-tech communications and operation of sophisticated equipment and weaponry - as well as opportunities ranging from human resources, IT and business to engineering, craftsmanship and other technical trades.
With pay starting at over £10,000 for a private soldier aged 17 years, compared to the average salary of £7,300 for under 18s in civilian employment, and skills and qualifications that will set you up for life well beyond soldiering, who could resist the wide and varied opportunities of an education and career with the Army?
