A guide to BSc(Hons) Fire Risk Engineering at Glasgow Caledonian University

As an expert in Fire Safety Design and Regulation, you will be protecting people and the buildings they live and work in.

Fire Risk Engineering is a comparatively new discipline, and the Fire Risk Engineering degree is the only programme of its kind in Scotland. Accredited by the Institution of Fire Engineers it also provides maximum exemptions from the exams of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. Graduates will have excellent job prospects in both Public and Private Sectors.

Fire Risk Engineering is concerned with the development, evaluation and communication of fire protection strategies and appropriate management systems. The increasing complexity of building design and maintenance requirements coupled with changes in fire safety legislation and the use of performance standards meant that traditional fire protection systems are often not appropriate.

From concept design construction through to completion, new buildings must be evaluated with fire safety in mind and the Fire Engineer is central in this process.

The degree was originally developed in collaboration with Strathclyde Fire Brigade and extensive use of computer modelling enhances student’s knowledge and understanding of fire hazard analysis, the evacuation of a building its susceptibility to fire
. Risk Management, forecasting, problem solving and communication, are all essential components of your learning.

The programme is designed to develop your knowledge and understanding of Building Design and Technology, Building and Fire Safety Regulations, Fire Dynamics, Fire Safety Design and Fire Risk Assessment

The degree can be studied either full time or part-time and advanced entry can be obtained depending on qualifications and experience

Career prospects are excellent, driven by developments in fire safety legislation and the overall size of the Construction Industry, which employs almost one in ten of the working population. The main career opportunities are with fire engineering consultants, design consultants, multi disciplinary consultants and building control organisations.

The programme is delivered by the School of The Built & Natural Environment at Glasgow Caledonian University.

This School is the largest of its kind in Scotland and produces more Building and Surveying graduates than any other University in the UK. We are one of a specially selected group of universities accorded ‘Partnership Status’ by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and The School is widely respected by employers in the field as a major provider of research, consultancy and distance learning provision.

The School enjoys very close links with the professional bodies and all of our programmes receive professional recognition, meaning that the learning we provide remains at the forefront of developments in the sector.
