Enhancing lives: a career in the pharmaceutical industry

Do you want a job where you work at the cutting edge of science? Helping patients get better?

There are many jobs available where you can make a difference to people’s health – but you don’t necessarily have to be a doctor or nurse.

Why not consider a career in the pharmaceutical industry – where medicines are discovered, developed, manufactured and marketed.

The pharmaceutical industry offers an exciting variety of careers ranging from research and drug discovery through to manufacturing, sales and marketing.

Some people think the industry just ‘makes’ medicines and, indeed, pharmaceutical manufacturing sites use some of the latest technology to produce medicines of high quality. If manufacturing is for you, there are plenty of challenges including engineering or chemical analysis.

But it’s not all about manufacture. First you have to discover and develop the new medicine.

Did you know that nearly all medicines are discovered by pharmaceutical companies? In fact many of the most successful pharmaceutical companies in the world have research and development facilities in the UK.

In research, you will find yourself doing experiments that no one has done before… you could choose to be a chemist, biologist, molecular biologist, pharmacologist, pharmacist, or clinical research associate… the list is endless. Whatever your role in a research or development team you will find opportunities to apply your scientific knowledge and your own ideas.

Do you have to be a scientist?

NO! There are lots of jobs within the pharmaceutical industry for people who want to work in areas such as IT, marketing, engineering and human resources.

The pharmaceutical industry has something for everyone. There are currently 60,000 people employed by the industry. Many are graduates or have post-graduate qualifications such as a PhD, MSc or MRes, while others have GCSEs, ‘A’ levels or ‘Highers’. There are often opportunities for further training and study related to the job you do, too.

Consider a career in the pharmaceutical industry if you want:

• To feel you are making a difference to people’s lives.
• To be rewarded for you achievements.
• A career where you can use the skills you have learned in different jobs within the industry.
• Excellent conditions of employment, often including sports and social facilities.
• To work at the leading edge of science and technology.
