Whats New In Computing?

We live in a fast changing world. Computing is no longer just about how business uses technology. Today it is hard to avoid computers in our lives. Students do not have to be technical experts to find a degree programme in computing to interest and reward them.

The Internet and its impact, mobile and home computing, data management and mining, creative technologies and the growth of the computer game and film special effects industries are just part of the changing focus of new degree programmes in computing.

BSc Computer Science is no longer the only Computing degree programme offered by computing departments and an A-level in Mathematics is certainly not required for entry to many of these new programmes. Whilst the long established programmes continue to concentrate on the fundamental design of Computers and on Computer Programming, many of the new programmes focus on the uses to which this technology can be put. Employers today value students who not only know about the technology but have a range of system development and communication skills and knowledge of how businesses and organisations work. Degree programmes in Information Systems are designed for students who are interested in the impact of technology on people, organisations and society

New degree programmes include Internet Technology, Multimedia Computing Artificial Intelligence, Forensic Computing and Human-Centered Computing. Also increasingly available are joint degree programmes where two subjects can be studied. This freedom often allows students to follow two related programmes such as Artificial Intelligence and Psychology, or Multimedia Computing and Marketing, or indeed to follow two unrelated programmes, one more career orientated than the other.

University Computing degree programmes have undergone as big a change as society itself. Many students, who previously felt Computing was not for them, will now find that there is a computing specialism that fits in perfectly with their aspirations.
