University of Yoda

DJ Yoda is currently hard at work in the studio finishing off his first ‘proper’ artist album. Yoda’s keeping a lid on who will feature on the as yet untitled album, but promises ‘a whole bunch of different rappers and singers’ with ‘some interesting surprises for people.’ So that’s cleared that up.

DJ_Yoda.jpgAs well as finding time to put together this secretive work, he’s also managed to find time to support the music element of Aimhigher - a scheme to encourage more people to consider university.

‘I wholeheartedly endorse Aimhigher and uni for anyone wanting to get connected and into the music industry. I studied English and American Literature with Film Studies at university (got a 2:1 thanks very much), and whilst it’s not like promoters test me on my understandings of the homoerotic undertones of Macbeth before booking me for a gig, my time at university prepared me for the crazy world of DJing in other ways.

‘Firstly, I spent three years at uni as a resident DJ at the fortnightly hip-hop night, which put me in contact with all the guest DJs that turned up, and gave me invaluable experience playing to crowds.

‘I also tried my hand at club promotion and music journalism, which led to my long-running “Spread Love” night in London, as well as my journalism work.

‘I can’t stress enough how much sense it makes to go to university for people thinking that a career in music makes it somehow irrelevant. It’s a priceless life experience, and is a great laugh anyway.

‘Good luck to anyone considering it, and if you’re thinking about mixing the theme tune from “Different Strokes” into a Jay Z instrumental, don’t bother, I’ve already tried it.’
