Universities Give Advice to Students Going Through Clearing
As clearing is upon us, we called up the Admissions offices of various universities and asked what advice they would give students who might be going through it this summer. Here’s a compilation of their words of wisdom; after examining them it seems the main points are focused on the balance between being incisive but not too hasty in your approach and of course, researching and enquiring beforehand. Links to the clearing pages of their websites have been included for further information and contact details.
Buckinghamshire County University College (BCUC)
“Make sure you’ve thoroughly researched the subject field you’re interested in so you’re clued up about possible alternative courses to your favoured one already and don’t have to do last minute research. Draw on your strengths even if you’ve not been as successful as you’d hoped for in your A-level results.”

City University
“Don’t despair or dwell on your exam results if they’re not what you wanted – although you will naturally be disappointed you must act quickly with regards to clearing, 66,000 applicants were offered places last year through this system so there is hope! Having said that, although you must act quickly do not rush into any rash decisions i.e. don’t take the first place you’re offered unless your 100% sure it’s the one for you. Your decision will affect your life for the next few years including where you live etc. If you’re not in a position to be choosy you’re required to be flexible about courses. Talk to Careers advisors, teachers, parents etc. anyone who’s been through clearing – their experiences can be of huge benefit to you. Visit the UCAS website for information or times online. Also think carefully about whether or not it may be more useful to re-sit your A levels.”

University of Leeds
“Make sure you have thoroughly researched long before you open your results especially if you’re not confident about how your exams went, gain as much knowledge of university courses that may interest you. Be extremely quick – after that it’s in the hands of the Gods!”

University of Huddersfield
“First bit of advice – don’t panic! Keep a cool head, there’ll most probably be a vacancy for you somewhere out there. Don’t be too disappointed if you have to look at different courses, which you do have the grades for. Look at the UCAS website and the independent’s guide to courses. Don’t rush it; even though you have to be quick don’t make snap decisions as soon as you’re offered something. Talk to the uni you were hoping to get into about allowing you onto a different course. If they say no, ring around others and enquire – they’re all geared up for the clearing period and will have staff used to dealing with your questions and problems. Try hard to be optimistic.”
