UCAS Extra

Don’t wait until clearing to find a place!  That’s the message UCAS is giving to students who are not holding offers from their six university choices.

ucasgirls.jpgUCAS Extra was introduced last year, and helped over 2000 students to secure a university place by the end of June.

Eligible applicants will be able to make additional choices to their UCAS application - one at a time - and is designed to encourage applicants to find a place before the summer rush.

Starting on 15th March and finishing at the end of June, universities and colleges with vacancies will list them on the UCAS website at www.ucas.com.  Eligible applicants will be able to refer themselves electronically via the Applicant Enquiries Service for courses with vacancies.  Applicants who prefer to use a paper form can opt to have an Extra Passport sent to them instead.

Who is eligible?

You will automatically be sent details of UCAS Extra either by post or electronically if:

• You have had unsuccessful decisions from all six of your choices

• You have cancelled your outstanding choices and hold no offers

• You have received replies back from all six choices and have declined all offers made to you.

ucasbloke.jpgIf you are made an offer, then you can choose whether or not to accept it.  If you are currently studying for exams, then any offer you are made is likely to be conditional on required grades.  If you accept the offer, then you won’t be able to add on any extra choices.

If you decide to decline the offer, or if the university or college cannot offer you a place, then you will be given another opportunity to use Extra, until the service ends at the end of June.  If you have used a paper Extra Passport, you must contact the college you applied to and ask them to return your passport.  Otherwise, you will be able to select another choice using the Applicant Enquiries Service.

So - do your research, be prepared to be flexible and don’t be afraid to ask for advice.

If you have any further queries about Extra and how it works, contact UCAS Customer Services on 0870 11 222 11.  More information can be found on the UCAS website at the following link.
