Studying in Derby

...is a multi-cultural city bursting with a wealth of entertainment venues, attractions, parks and shops - a perfect combination for students.

pg1-Admissions-main.jpgOne of the benefits of studying in the centre of England is the proximity to other university towns and cities. About one third of the nation lives within 60 miles of Derby. Many in cities like Manchester, Sheffield, Nottingham, Leicester, Coventry and Birmingham.

Once a Roman town, it became an administrative centre and with the Industrial Revolution become an important industrial town as well as a railway town. Famous industrial names still at Derby include Rolls Royce and Royal Crown Derby.

Today this large regional city has all the modern facilities you would expect. Cinemas and theatres, including the Derby Playhouse, as well as parks and entertainment. There is a large shopping centre as well as out of town shopping areas, one of which has a large multi-screen cinema.

In addition there are two indoor markets, open every day, the Eagle Centre Market and the Market Hall. As well as the market the Eagle Centre has a selection of chain stores. More shops stretch along the roads away from the Cathedral.

The compact, pedestrianised city centre makes exploring Derby’s museums and attractions easy – most are free too.

Billing it’s self as the most haunted city in Britain, the local tourist information centre is the starting point for a popular "Ghost Walk" through the city tunnels. World famous, these walks have attracted nearly 100,000 people in eight years. You can even have sleep overs in the Derby Friargate Gaol!

smiley-girl.jpgThe Peak District, the first National Park set up in Britain, lies less than 20 miles from Derby. Situated at the southern end of the Pennines it covers part of six counties and covers 555 square miles, most of it in Derbyshire and attracts around 22 million visitors a year.

Derby offers an excellent choice of restaurants where you can savour traditional and worldwide cuisine to suit any palate and wallet. There is also a multitude of modern cafes and bars, many hosting live evening entertainment.

Derby has more to offer than just the Peak District, it has great nightlife! There are loads of student friendly pubs and clubs in Derby, some have dedicated student nights and best of all they’re cheap!

Famed for being the ‘real ale’ capital of the UK, the city is home to a great selection of traditional pubs and hosts the annual CAMRA summer and winter Beer Festivals at the Assembly Rooms.

And don’t forget, if it’s a change of venue you want, you can be in Nottingham or Sheffield with all they have to offer a poor student, within 45 minutes.
