Sea Your Way to a Free Degree and Free Travel
With the new Merchant Navy Foundation Degree or Scottish Professional Diploma you can do both!
You can gain your degree and train for a great career as a Ship’s
Officer using this brand new training scheme and you can look forward
to a career where
- Time off is measured in weeks and months not just days
- Your days are challenging and rewarding
- You can quickly gain responsibility and a salary to match
- There is a life time of personal development opportunities at sea and ashore!
There are world class schemes available for you to train as
either a Navigating (Deck) Officer or an Engineer Officer which both
give you a not only a Foundation Degree in your chosen discipline but
also a professional qualification which is highly regarded and in
demand worldwide.

Navigating (Deck) Officers are responsible for the ships navigation
from port to port and the safe handling of the cargo - which could be
anything from passengers to a giant oil tanker carrying the equivalent
of 2 million barrels of crude oil.
Engineering Officers are responsible for the care and maintenance of the ship, a multimillion pound floating city with its engine, machinery and complex technological systems
So what will I have to do?
For entry to the course you will need 120 UCAS points in A levels/Scottish Highers, and good grades in GCSE or Standard grade English, Maths and Physics (or Dual / Combined Science). This will generally mean grades A or B or credit grades in Scotland.
The course will last about three years and begins with a period at
college followed by time at sea for training “on the job” by qualified
ships officers. The remainder of the course will be alternate sea and
college phases. The course is fully sponsored by a shipping company or
training organisation who will pay all of your training costs and give
you a salary or living allowance. The sponsoring organisation will also
arrange your college placement and organise and pay for your travel to
their ships which could be anywhere in the world!
Further training and practical experience will allow you to reach
the highest levels on board either as Captain or Chief Engineer. Your
can also develop your academic studies to Honours degree level.
Where can I study?
You will study at one of the colleges / universities offering Merchant Navy Foundation Degree or Scottish Professional Diploma training, depending on your sponsoring company training arrangements. Details on the website.
