Profiles - Carillion Construction Training
The most common image of the Construction Industry is of the slightly weathered, burley chap laying bricks on a new build site, or similarly constructing a roof or completing the finishing touches with the internal and external decoration. Headed and managed by an all male team.
Carillion, with its ‘Equality of Opportunity’ and its focus on ‘Sustainable Profitable Growth’ make the afore mentioned, a practice of the past.
School Leavers are our raw material, the future Construction Industry workforce and great emphasis is placed on recruitment and selection.
We have looked at the way we market our Apprenticeship schemes, to further encourage women to join the Industry.
Our successes are not limited to Apprentices. They have included trade Assessors/Instructors, College/Centre Managers, Placement and Monitoring Officers, Area Managers and Administration Development and Support Managers. So as you can see, we practice what we preach.
Here are but a few of our women working within the Industry:-
Debbie, formally unemployed.
Debbie applied to join as an Apprentice Bricklayer. She was at that time the only female on the programme. Debbie and her group embarked on a 52 week condensed training course, starting with an induction, followed by basic skills and finally NVQ level 2 Trowel Occupations.
During her time with the group, Debbie made many friends. Some of which have proved to be valuable contacts.
Debbie completed, achieved her NVQ level 2 in Bricklaying and is still working in the Industry as a Bricklayer.
Its always nice to speak to contractors and sole traders alike and have them mention, ‘Oh it was Carillion that trained Debbie? She’s been doing some work for me recently. She’s really good’
Debbie has made many friends and contacts out of Bricklaying, but more importantly she has made a successful career.
Kerry, school leaver.
Kerry left school and as a result of our new focus on marketing got to here about Carillion Construction Training.
Kerry applied for a post as Apprentice, Painting and Decorating department. Kerry, although a little shy, was absolutely determined to become part of Carillons’ Apprenticeship programme.
Kerry started in the August following her July completion from secondary education and embarked on a Foundation qualification. Once achieved, she progressed onto her NVQ level 2 Apprenticeship.
Kerry is working on site with a painting and Decorating Company local to her who like us is very proactive when it comes to training and as such has had the benefit of additional training.
Kerry has also taken part in the launch of ‘Apprenticeships Task Force’, which was held in Selfridges, London earlier this year.
The prospects for Kerry are numerous and we wish her continued success.
The Construction Industry offers many career pathways, with an absolute abundance of work.
Take a decision to join our Industry of committed professional individuals and gain the skills of a lifetime.
