BA (Hons) Technical Effects for the Performing Arts
Do you want to work in Film, Television or Theatre?
Do you want to make body armour or special effects costumes used on 'creatures' films?
Do you want to create masks or realistic prosthetic limbs?
Do you want to work on large carnival costume pieces or small puppets?
Then you should consider studying Technical Effects at London College of Fashion. Our exciting degree course aims to develop creators and interpreters of images for the human form within the performing arts. We provide our students with a high level of vocational skills and an in-depth understanding of design for the performing arts in the specialism of Technical Effects.
On successfully completing the course, our graduates are well placed to find professional employment in film, television or theatre in technical effects. Students leave with a professional portfolio, encompassing the wide range of experience offered by the course. The performance project, held in a professional environment, and the Final Degree Show, offer the students the opportunity to display their work to potential employers. Our graduating students have gone on to work on film projects such as the Harry Potter series, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, as well as international theatre and opera productions such as His Dark Materials at the National Theatre and in specialist workshops such as Jim Henson's Creature Shop, Animated Extras and Asylum.
During this three year full time degree you will develop a wide range of vocational skills requiring the use of an extensive list of techniques and materials. These include: life-sculpting, life-drawing, casting and mould-making, fabrication, polystyrene carving, applied pattern cutting, body padding, puppetry, introductory animatronics, core moulds, fibreglass, foam latex, vac-forming, hair replacement and silicon. Skills are taught within the context of a project based brief, developing themes and ideas from scripts. In the second year you will have the opportunity to undertake a work placement or take part in an industry
linked project. Past placements have included work on animated feature films, theatre productions, television programmes and advertising.
You will work alongside students from our degree courses in Costume and Make up and Prosthetics for the Performing Arts. The three distinctive courses, Costume, Make up and Prosthetics, and Technical Effects, allows students to develop a high level of creative, practical and theoretical expertise in their chosen field, underpinned by a broad understanding of the performing arts. Embedded in the courses philosophy is the idea of shared learning across these three subject areas developed through team projects, classes and workshops which allow students to form creative partnerships, reflecting the essentially collaborative nature of the performing arts industry.
