Headliners

Headliners is a UK-wide news agency producing news, features and comment by young people for everyone.

childrensXpress.jpgThrough a unique learning through journalism programme, young people aged 8 to 18 research and write stories on issues that are important to them for publication in national and local newspapers, magazines, television and radio.

The agency is open to all young people but recruitment is targeted at those who would most benefit from the programme.

The aim of Headliners, a registered charity, is to bring the voice of young people to a wide audience and through their work with young people have a long term impact on:

• confidence and self-esteem

• literacy and academic performance

• leadership and ability to work in teams

• oral and written communication skills

• social skills and independence

• expectations of future prospects

Currently they recruit in disadvantaged inner city areas. Headliners thrives on diversity, successfully bringing together young people, 8 to 18, from all backgrounds and welcoming young people with all abilities. More than 500 young people in six UK cities participated in Headliners projects last year.

Headliners is a place where young people:

• make the decisions and take responsibility

• meet people they wouldn't meet anywhere else

• influence adult opinion

• discover new opportunities

Why journalism?

They have discovered that journalism provides an ideal tool with which kids can develop their potential.

Every Headliners story involves its members in:

• identifying an idea to pursue

• assessing its relevance for Headliners

• taking the idea apart and looking at it from all angles

• conducting background research

• teamwork

• teasing out questions to ask

• organising, preparing for, running and recording an interview or roundtable

• reading the transcript, selecting and arranging key elements

• determining the final text

Headliners has a remarkable success rate and if you’d like to be a part of it then visit www.headliners.org
