Full Steam Ahead with a Merchant Navy Foundation Degree
Train at college, travel the world and get paid whilst you are doing it!
Would you like a career where:
- You are paid whilst you take a degree
- You get the chance to travel the world
- Time off is measured in weeks and months - not just days
- Your days are challenging, varied and rewarding
- You can quickly gain responsibility and a salary to match
- There is a lifetime of personal development opportunities?
There’s a new world class training programme available for seafaring
officers. The Merchant Navy Foundation Degree provides a first-class
training programme leading to a recognised professional qualification
as a Navigating or Engineer Officer.
Qualified seafaring officers are able to work all over the world on the
many varied ship types that make up the British shipping industry. Not
only will you have control of the latest technological systems and work
with highly sophisticated machinery, but your Foundation Degree
qualification and experience will be in high demand for thousands of
land-based jobs!
So what’s involved?
The world-class training programme leads to professional seafaring
certification, known as the Officer of the Watch (OOW) Certificate.
Your formal training starts at a nautical college or university,
followed by a sea-going training phase. At sea you will put your
learning into practice and work under the supervision of qualified
officers. Your time will then alternate between college studies and
training at sea.
The course lasts approximately three years and sponsorship for training
is available from shipping companies and training organisations. Your
course fees will be paid for as well as a salary or training allowance.
Sea phases aboard ship could take you anywhere in the world and your
sponsoring company will arrange for your transport to the relevant port
to join the ship.
Further training and experience will enable you to work through the
ranks to senior officer and you could achieve the highest levels on
board as Captain or Chief Engineer. You can also further your academic
studies to Honours Degree level.
So how do you get started?
In order to qualify for the Foundation Degree course, you will need
120 UCAS points in A levels/Scottish Highers, and good grades in GCSE
or Standard grade English, Maths and Physics (or Dual / Combined
Science). This will generally mean grades A or B or credit grades in
Scotland. Your sponsoring Company may also have their own qualification
requirements.
Where can you study?
You will study at one of the colleges / universities offering
Merchant Navy Foundation Degree or Scottish Professional Diploma
training, depending on your sponsoring company training arrangements.
