EPIC Your Role In Roads
Look beneath the surface and you will find a vibrant industry offering a host of exciting and rewarding challenges. This is the business responsible for laying Britain’s new roads and repairing old ones. So with 26 million vehicles travelling over 230,000 miles of road and a major improvement commitment from government, it has a big future. The business is not just confined to roads or the UK, you could find yourself working on international runways, container berths, major bridges and a whole variety of fascinating contracts around the world.

Whether you join straight from school or as a graduate, the industry offers roles ranging from plant operatives through to engineers, planners, estimators, site and technical managers, IT specialists and financial controllers. For selected graduates there is the opportunity to be sponsored as you complete your qualifications before starting full-time work. The contracting and surfacing sector includes some of the UK’s biggest companies, so training and career progression is taken seriously.

GARY CREDLAND
AGE: 27
CONTRACTS MANAGER,
RMC
“My main responsibility is to plan, manage and programme all the highway contractual work in the region. Projects range in size from small scale contracts costing £10,000, up to £1m for a bigger job. I’ve been lucky to work with people at a variety of levels, which has helped me develop my management skills.”
KIRK SHEPPERD
AGE: 27
FRAMEWORK PLANNER,
LAFARGE
“I get involved at the tender stage, working with estimators to cost the job then seeing projects through onsite. There isn’t room for mistakes. Anything not picked up on the initial programme has a time and cost implication, so background research has to be thorough. It’s a really interesting job and it is satisfying to watch a project unfold, knowing you have played a major part.”
JOAN HEERY
AGE: 37
SITE AGENT,
TARMAC
“There are lots of challenges to overcome, but for the right person, the potential on offer within road contracting is enormous. I find it very rewarding – there are many parts of my job I enjoy such as the variety of work and the mix of people in the industry, but mostly it’s the satisfaction of seeing a project completed.”
ANDY NICHOLSON
AGE: 31
PLANNING ENGINEER,
HANSON CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS
“I was taken on following a year out with Hanson. From there, the company has supported me in studying for my MA. In the road contracting industry, there are many opportunities to get a lot of responsibility quickly. As an estimator, everything I do has a consequence to it, which is something I particularly enjoy about the job. I also get satisfaction from winning a contract – it’s nice to know that my work has been successful.”
