Build a Career in the Business World
If you are a regular ‘Get Smaart’ reader, you’ve probably seen PricewaterhouseCoopers featured before. You may already know that we’re one of the world’s pre-eminent professional services organisations with over 120,000 people around the world. You may even be aware that we work with a wide variety of clients from Premiership football clubs to music TV channels, conducting audits of their company results, giving them tax advice, or pointers on how to manage their risks more effectively. But, did you know that PwC recruits around 100 young people every year to join us as Accounting Technicians and Gap Year students in the UK?

Our Accounting Technician Programme is a fantastic opportunity for students who are focused on building a career in the world of business and finance, but who are looking for a real alternative to university.
There are plenty of reasons why so many students choose to join PwC as an Accounting Technician each year. Firstly, there’s the training. When you start working at PwC, we spend the first week or so helping you settle into our firm. We provide you with your lap-top and all the business and IT skills you need to get stuck into work. You learn on-the-job too, learning from your colleagues and your clients every day. In addition to this, you also study towards a professional accounting qualification, and you should qualify as an Accounting Technician within 2 years of joining PwC. Once you have qualified as an Accounting Technician, you can then go on to study towards your Chartered Accountancy qualifications, and be fully qualified within a further 3 years.
The next reason is the firm itself. PwC is well respected and admired in the business community, and we work with some of the top names in business and finance around the world. As an Accounting Technician you work as part of our Assurance & Audit client teams, assisting with different tasks and projects, and you could be working with a wide range of organisations, from a variety of industry sectors. The social side of things is good too – lots of support from your coach and other colleagues to help you along the way.
And finally, there’s money. All our Technicians receive a competitive salary, and this is reviewed every year. So, our Technician Programme is an alternative to university that expands your wallet and your mind!

Hollie Saxon, Accounting Technician
I joined PricewaterhouseCoopers in September 2003, on completion of my A-levels. I achieved the required 280 UCAS points in the following subjects; History, Business Studies and ICT. What persuaded me to join the PwC Accounting Technician programme was the time it took to become fully qualified - four / five years compared to the six it would take through the university route. I would not only be studying but also earning money and gaining experience. Since joining I have been given responsibilities that I didn’t think I would be entrusted with. These roles include auditing sections of final accounts, looking at government grants and dealing with clients. This has taught me to act in a professional manner and be exceptionally thorough when working on client accounts.
