BSc Audiology at the University of Manchester
Why Manchester?
The Human Communication and Deafness Group was established in 1919 and is one of the best known educational institutions in Audiology world-wide. The group was rated 5 in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise and its teaching was rated “Excellent” in the last Teaching Quality Assessment. Masters courses in Audiology have been running in this department since the early 1970s and it is this background that facilitated establishment of the BSc course in 2002 which was one of the first to be commissioned in the UK.
Course Structure
The BSc course covers 4 years, of which the 3rd year is spent on full-time clinical placement in an audiology department in the North-West region. The first two years are University-based, with a combination of lectures, practical sessions and short clinical placements, while the 4th year completes the course with an emphasis on research methodology, professional issues and some specialized options. The final 10 weeks of the course is also spent in an NHS audiology department, so that students are well-placed to manage the transition from training to employment.
Candidates are usually required to have A-level grades of BBC in relevant subjects. All places are NHS-funded with means-tested bursaries available in addition to a trainee salary in year 3.
Career Opportunities
Huge government investment into NHS audiology services in recent years has helped raise the profile and resources of this branch of healthcare. The number of vacant posts has greatly increased in recent years as a result and there are currently shortages of audiologists in many geographical areas.
