Young Engineers are World Beaters in the USA
Posted on Mon, 19 November 2007 13:36:10 (187 Reads)
Andrew Nowell (19) from Nottingham and David Badger (18) from Sheffield didn’t even know each other until they competed in the 2007 Young Engineer for Britain (YEB) final, but now they are the best of mates with their heads still in the clouds. Not only did Andrew win The Duke of York’s Award for his electronics prowess at YEB, and David win his age group in the overall competition, but the pair of them were selected to represent the United Kingdom at the 2007 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, from 13th-19th May in Albuquerque, New Mexico and what an adventure that proved to be.
Against an international field of over 1,500 students from all over the world, Andrew won top spot in the Electrical and Engineering category winning $3,000, while David came second winning $1,500. Not only that, but Andrew was also presented with the Alcatel Lucent Special Award for Innovation, earning him another whopping $15,000. "This was the most amazing experience of my life, I felt like a Hollywood film star collecting an Oscar. David and I will remember our trip for the rest of our lives. Entering Young Engineer for Britain last year turned out to be a life changing experience for both of us", Andrew said.
Andrew’s amazing success was all down to his Remote Control Interface Security System (RCISS) project, whilst David’s was due to his "TUG" device, a special trolley enabling heavy trailers to be simply lifted and manoeuvred into position on the back of a vehicle.:

Their triumphs were just part of the story, both Andrew and David had a fantastic time meeting fellow students from around the world and taking part in the events laid on each night by the host city, Albuquerque. David said "Where in the world could you go to meet so many people from different countries, who are the same age as you and who have the same interests? It was just amazing!"
Mobbed
On their very first night at the event David and Andrew had a taste of what was to come when they went to a ‘pin exchange’ where they were mobbed by overseas students all wanting a UK Young Engineers enamel pin badge. Andrew said "we ran out of pins within 5 minutes of being there, we could easily have handed out thousands".
Arriving back in the UK exhausted but ecstatic, Andrew and David were so enthused at their experience that they are now determined to continue developing their ideas in the strong belief that they really do have world beating potential at their finger tips.

You too could walk in Andrew’s and David’s footsteps by entering the Young Engineer for Britain 2008 Competition. Just log on to www.youngeng.org and click on competitions. They were not the first YEB contestants from these shores to taste success either, for in 2006 Tanya Budd from Reading was also a major award winner and has since gone on to win numerous other accolades as well as taking her ‘Hypo-Hoist’ marine rescue device to market and enjoying the rich royalties on sales.
