Short Taster Courses for Budding Engineers

Engineering plays a vital part in every aspect our lives. From the cars we drive and the buildings we live and work in, through the food we eat and the waste we create, to essential machinery, ships and icons such as the Channel Tunnel and the London Eye - engineers are closely involved in the innovation, efficiency and creativity we see all around us. Whether you are thinking about mechanical engineering, a structural discipline or even bio or environmental engineering, you'll need to look long and hard to find a career as diverse, significant, stimulating, exciting and challenging.

The Smallpeice Trust understands just how diverse engineering actually is and offers a wide variety of curriculum enrichment and enhancement activities designed to show just how amazing engineering really is. Through its four-day, heavily subsidised residential courses at key universities, the Smallpeice Trust will give you an insight into what it’s all about and help you to work out whether a career in engineering is right for you. From biomedical engineering, marine technology, and nanotechnology, to aerospace, motorsports, robotics, and supercomputing, there’s plenty of subjects to choose from.
On the courses, you’ll be working with real engineers so that you see first-hand how they solve real-life problems. All is all, this isn't stuffy, dull classroom work - in fact, many students tell us how intriguing, inspiring and surprising they found their event.
[VOXED OUT BOXES] "I gained a real insight into what being a material scientist meant and surprisingly found that I was considering being one, an option that I had not previously thought about. I found that this course really helped me to make an informed decision about my future". Kaveri Sameer, Materials Technology Course at University of Oxford (aged 15 from Buckinghamshire).
"I came away from the course with a greatly enhanced knowledge of electronics and the skills associated with them. I now have a desire to get my own soldering iron, and get stuck into making my own devices. It has made me think a lot harder about becoming an engineer. I look forward with eager anticipation to the robotics course that I am booked onto in the summer, and I plan to attend other events next year". Luke Hughes, Electronic Engineering Course at Harper Adams University College, Shropshire (aged 15 from Newcastle-on-Tyne).
"This was definitely a brilliant experience and I would recommend it to others without a doubt. I will definitely want to come on future courses and hope very much to be on one next summer or sooner! The experience gained from this course of engineering in the real world is very valuable; it gave me a real look into engineering and what it involves to be a marine engineer. The foundation it has given me is one I believe can be used in any sort of engineering, and not just the marine side. The entire course was awesome and I am looking forward to attending more in the future". Michael Yeomans, Marine Technology at University of Southampton (aged 14 from Guildford).
