The Young Engineer for Britain Competition could be Your Route to Success
Daniel
November 19, 2007 2:07:16 PM
By now, you will have realised that this magazine is crammed full of people’s success stories thanks to engineering. You cannot fail to have noticed that the word ‘engineering’ is the operative throughout. The point is any of us can be engineers given the right opportunity to put our ideas into practice and your big opportunity could be entering Young Engineer for Britain. It is a widely held belief that there’s a creative genius bursting to get out of all of us. This may well be true, but why is it that only a relative few manage to ignite that magic spark? The answer is that probably only the few are adventurous and determined enough actually to make their ideas happen. That doesn’t have to be the case.

Daniel
November 19, 2007 2:02:11 PM
Engineering plays a vital part in every aspect our lives. From the cars we drive and the buildings we live and work in, through the food we eat and the waste we create, to essential machinery, ships and icons such as the Channel Tunnel and the London Eye - engineers are closely involved in the innovation, efficiency and creativity we see all around us. Whether you are thinking about mechanical engineering, a structural discipline or even bio or environmental engineering, you'll need to look long and hard to find a career as diverse, significant, stimulating, exciting and challenging.

Doctor Maggie Holds the Keys to the Universe
Daniel
November 19, 2007 1:43:42 PM
The 3 Rs are not rocket science, but as it happens, they were for Dr Maggie Aderin, Britain's leading female rocket scientist, because she's dyslexic. As a kid people thought that she was a bit slow. How wrong could they be, for now she is one of the brains behind the James Webb Space Telescope that will replace Hubble in 2013!

Young Engineers are World Beaters in the USA
Daniel

Andrew Nowell (19) from Nottingham and David Badger (18) from Sheffield didn’t even know each other until they competed in the 2007 Young Engineer for Britain (YEB) final, but now they are the best of mates with their heads still in the clouds. Not only did Andrew win The Duke of York’s Award for his electronics prowess at YEB, and David win his age group in the overall competition, but the pair of them were selected to represent the United Kingdom at the 2007 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, from 13th-19th May in Albuquerque, New Mexico and what an adventure that proved to be.

Electronics – a Hot Bed for Innovation
Daniel
November 19, 2007 1:24:01 PM
When you think of creativity who are the first people to spring to your mind? Perhaps you would think of artists or song writers or possibly performers? You may therefore be surprised by my contention that some of the most creative people in the country, or for that matter the world, work in the electronics industry.

Science - Finding a Way Round Problems
Daniel
November 19, 2007 12:55:56 PM
If you study science you can only become a scientist, right? Wrong. If you study history you don’t have to be a historian so why do people think that science students have to go on to be scientists? No matter which science you choose to study you will be honing skills that employers love. The most obvious skill you’ll have to offer is numeracy. However, maths in science is more than just putting numbers in to formulae, it’s about analysing data, spotting trends and building a picture of what is happening in the same way that businesses will examine market data or sales figures. But you could have guessed that one; what about problem solving? Scientific experiment is all about finding a way round problems to discover the answers you need, maybe you are trying to find out why something is happening or altering an outcome. Carefully examining all sides of the problem and assessing possible solutions is something that is second nature to scientists and is invaluable to employers in all fields.

Daniel

Architecture - Are You Passionate about Buildings?
Daniel
November 19, 2007 11:37:43 AM
This is by far the most important question. If the answer is yes, then Architecture could be the career for you - so keep reading! Most successful architects are highly passionate about the built environment. If your interest in buildings is merely a vague one, you may find that seven years of intense training will be enough to kill your enthusiasm. Entry to most schools of Architecture is competitive, courses are tough and drop-out rates are high. In other words, only consider studying Architecture if you feel you are absolutely committed to it.

Engineering your Future
Daniel
November 15, 2007 1:24:03 PM
Engineering is worth shouting about and to get rid of a few stereotypes, you’ll be glad to know that more often than not, engineering is not dirty, not boring and certainly not badly paid – in fact, the average wage for experienced petrochemical engineers is actually higher than most equivalently experienced office workers – including accountants and legal executives! So it should come as no surprise to learn that the same applies to those in most fields of engineering – including civil engineering, communications engineering and those in the mechanical engineering field.

Geography - A Landscape of Opportunity
Daniel
November 14, 2007 1:33:12 PM
Why Choose Geography?
Geography is an education for life. Students choose to study Geography for many different reasons. For some it is because they wish to understand more about the world around them. But geography is much more than precipitation cycles, podzolic soils, population pyramids and plate tectonics – it is the study of the relationships between the Earth’s landscapes, people, places and environments. In short, geography helps us to understand and explain the complex world we live in. Governments and businesses increasingly recognise the important role of geographical knowledge in understanding current local and global issues, such as climate change and world trade. Furthermore, the specific skills and expertise gained by geography graduates make them highly prized by employers.

As a nurse it is possible to work in hospitals, GP surgeries, schools, people’s homes and specialist clinics to name but a few. For those with a penchant for travel, nurses also work on cruise ships and in the armed forces. The skills that nurses have are universally sought and there are many opportunities to work in other countries as well.
