Become a Sound Engineer

Posted on Tue, 18 Mar 2008 16:11:01

How would you react if I where to present you with a picture of a person screaming?

My guess is with probable indifference, an acknowledgement that the person in the picture might be frightened, in pain, angry or, perhaps, just trying to get someone’s attention. If I were to play you an audio recording of the same person screaming a different scenario generally ensues. Your body would react more potently to the emotions carried in the sound waves. A direct link would be made with your own memories; the hairs on the back of your neck may start to rise... A more powerful message is received.

Hazard Warning Idea to Help Car Drivers

A novel new portable automatic hazard system for drivers has won the title of Young Engineer for Britain for fifteen years old inventor Patrick Burns from Newry, County Down. The device, which can be plugged into a car’s power outlet in the event of a breakdown, not only provides a working light to help the driver check out or repair the problem, but also warns him or her of oncoming traffic. It does this by sensing the beam of headlights or vibrations from oncoming traffic and sounding a buzzer.

Meet a Movie Stuntman

Posted on Mon, 17 Mar 2008 15:15:38

He’s been set on fire, shot, stabbed, he’s fallen off cliffs and roofs, crashed through windows and had a screen fight with James Bond – and he lives to tell the tale! That man is David Cronnelly, stunt man extraordinaire. We caught up with him at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, the UK’s equivalent of Hollywood, on a two week hiatus before beginning work on a new movie ‘Wolfman’, starring Anthony Hopkins and Benito del Torro.

One reason Dave is still alive, and most other stunt performers for that matter, is because of the riggers and engineers, who devise amazing equipment and techniques to make those blockbuster movie scenes so realistic and spectacular, but also as safe as they can be.

The Joys of Constructing London!

Posted on Wed, 18 Apr 2007 16:08:12
Construction must be the biggest industry in London at the moment, in the short walk from Moorgate to St Paul’s I must have walked past at least a dozen construction sites, and bumped into as many familiar faces. By the time I reach my own site I’m used to the loud repetitive sounds that fly out from these half built structures and am looking forward to another busy day.

Part 1 - Julia Hind, student at Lord Lawson of Beamish school in Newcastle.

I'm a member of the Lord Lawson team currently creating a National Lottery funded film, showing the effects Lottery grants have had on the regeneration of the North East. However, we did not come upon this amazing opportunity easily. First we had to submit a pitch to First Light with our ideas with a basic outline of what we intended to include such as music, images and themes. From these initial pitches a few schools from around the region were invited to a workshop at the Centre for Life, Newcastle. And we were one of those lucky teams.
