Studying Sport, Music or Travel at Bucks New University
Images of sport, music and tourism conjure up Olympic athletes, rock and pop bands and sandy beaches, but behind these wonderful images lie three industries, which are substantial profit earners in the UK economy. Learning about the sports, music and tourism industries has taken on a new focus over the past decade with industry and educational partners cementing relationships which allow students to gain first hand experience of the industry itself through seasonal employment, guest lecturers or industry related projects.
Apart from full time Undergraduate Degrees and HNDs there are two new ways in which these partnerships can work, The Graduate Apprenticeship Scheme, where students spend three years in a specific industry whilst taking their degree, or the Foundation Degree where students liaise and work with industry whilst studying on a programme. These two avenues have opened up education to both those with educational qualifications and those who have knowledge and experience from the world of work.
At Bucks New University the vocational nature of the Degree, HND and Foundation Degree programmes has won accolades from the Government, Awarding Bodies and the Industry. In the sports industry the successes are many with David Law, the Community Development Officer at London Irish Rugby Club, and Andrew Gardiner, the Secretary of Colchester United Football Club being two examples of students who fully utilised their links with industrial partners to secure excellent employment on leaving the University. The Links with Wycombe Wanders, Wasps Rugby Club, David Lloyd and other sports partners enable the students to accumulate both knowledge and experience alongside their academic qualifications so that they have an added advantage in the job market.
The Faculty of Leisure and Tourism was the first institution in the UK to run a Music Industry Management Degree programme and has forged links with over 100 industrial partners since 1995. The state of the art studios, The Centre for Crowd Management Studies and the willingness of industry partners to share their knowledge with those on the programme has enabled the sustainability of these innovative programmes for nearly a decade. Past students from the programme now work for companies such as Sony, Virgin, the Mean Fiddler, XL Recordings and many other well known names and brands in the music industry. Some have even gone on to manage their own music businesses and others to play in or manage bands.
The Tourism and Airline & Airport programmes utilise industrial partners to the fullest with a wide range of industrial placements within the airline, airport and travel industries. These courses cover a wide range of disciplines and students gain both hands on experience and vocational development to prepare them for work after the programme. As Andrew Skip, Managing Director of Bristol Airport states ‘From an industry perspective, we see these courses as vital to our future managers and supervisors. They are highly relevant to our business and definitely put graduates in a strong position for competing for vacancies in this fantastic business.’
Our exciting programmes now offer the recent additions of Outdoor Education & Adventure Recreation, Extreme Sports Studies, Crowd & Safety Management, Air Transport Management with Commercial Pilot Training and Events & Conference Management. All of these programmes are academically based with a significant focus on work based and vocational training.
