After many months of testing, the winners of the National Science and Engineering Competition have been declared. The Young Engineer of the Year was revealed as Shawn Brown in recognition of his Solar Bike, a bamboo framed electric trike. The Young Scientist of the Year was revealed as Thomas Hearing for his project in mapping Monmouth beach and the eroding ammonite pavement.

The prizes, which were presented by the Rt Hon Lord Mandelson, include a cash prize of £2,000 and an experience prize of their choosing.

UEL was amongst the prestigious bodies and organisations sponsoring the National Science and Engineering Awards at this year's Big Bang: UK Young Scientists’ and Engineers’ Fair held in Manchester this month.

Prof. Mohammad Dastbaz (Dean of the School of Computing, Information Technology and Engineering) and Sarah Pallett (Communications Officer) attended the fair and awards last Friday and were impressed with the high level of research and inventions that were on display.

Prof. Dastbaz presented the prestigious Duke of York Rose Bowl award. The winner of the Duke of York Award (for creative use of electronics) was James Buckley from King Edwards School in Birmingham. As part of his prize James will get the opportunity to visit Buckingham Palace along with UEL for the official presentation from the Duke of York later this year.

Mohammad said "That there were an impressive range of innovative projects on display here and it is also great to see so many female pupils interested in engineering and science with very impressive projects."

The fair includes the National Science & Engineering Competition and features compelling and exciting shows, workshops and presentations and displays that cover the entire spectrum of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The awards included a special appearance from Lord Mandelson who presented a number of awards and gave a short speech where he praised the young talented entrants, saying they were very important for the future of the country and ended by saying "Your country needs you!"
