Choosing a Business Degree
T
he reasons for choosing a Business course are as wide and varied as the courses on offer but perhaps the most important is that these courses provide a broad and relevant educational base for the future professional advisor and business manager.
Changes in markets, government policy, social trends and technology require graduates ready to take up and develop management careers and to have an appropriate range and mix of knowledge and skills. The same is true whether you are considering a career as an entrepreneur, thinking about starting your own business, as a manager, or as an adviser or consultant. A Business Studies degree prepares you for such a future by giving you a wide range of skills.
Graduates can go into management training positions in retail, financial services, hospitality, and marketing as well as professional training in accountancy.
Choosing your business degree may be quite difficult; there are so many different options. You may want to develop more specialist knowledge in an area such as Accounting, Economics, Finance, Information Systems, Marketing, and more! Some courses include a year’s placement, and there are options for exchange study abroad and the study of business languages.
Most if nor all courses mix academic and vocational experience to great effect, producing young professionals with high standards of knowledge and the ability to apply their skills practically.
How to start your research?
Start by using the search facility on the ucas website www.ucas.ac.uk, all courses on offer at UK institutions are listed there. Research all the courses that catch your eye. It's imperative you go onto university websites and check out the content of each course.
Once you've narrowed down your choice of subject then you can start looking at what university you want to apply to. There are lots of ways to help narrow down your institution choice; parental advice, teachers recommendation, league tables, destination of graduates etc.
You may also want to consider whether you want to study at a city-based campus university or a university in a more rural location. Accommodation costs, travel costs between accommodation and uni, the social side (you wont spend all your time studying!) do you like the location etc.
Above all don't worry; UK universities are amongst the best in the world for business degrees, so you won't go far wrong wherever you choose.
