Southampton Guide For Students

A university city positively vibrating with life, Southampton is the ultimate place to meet exciting people and make memories that’ll last a lifetime. The city is bursting with interesting tales and friendly locals, meaning you will be welcomed and get settled right into making this place your home away from home. On top of that, it’s also a refreshing change from some of the other big cities in the UK, being a major port - so you’ll even have a beautiful waterfront setting for your university adventure!

Southampton’s medieval background means that you’ll find magnificent castle conversions dotted all over and transformed into cool shopping centres and museums. The saying ‘old meets new’ is the perfect fit for this city, with culture blended with lively action on every corner. The city’s museums and art galleries are testament to this; check out the awesome Medieval Merchants House and take a journey to the past for less than a fiver whilst enjoying a truly unique experience. Or why not visit the awesome Maritime Museum for a look into Southampton’s history, plus check out the touching Titanic Voices exhibition and re-live the tragic experience of the ill-fated maiden voyage. For something a little more interactive, visit the historic Old Town and discover intriguing mysteries and ancient tales about Southampton’s heritage!

Southampton puts on a great show no matter the weather, with an extensive choice in theatres and live music at hand to entertain the masses. The renovated Mayflower Theatre rivals any West End establishment and puts on an assortment of fantastic shows, stand-up comedies and world famous plays. Artsy souls will love the Picture House, overlooking the beautiful Ocean Village Marina, where you can enjoy a great mixture of current films and niche masterpieces, or simply relax in the bar or outside dining area and take in spectacular views of the Marina.

The fun doesn’t stop there, as Southampton offers an inspirational sports culture. Football fans will love the Southampton FC stadium, where regular games are played throughout the year and die-hard followers enjoy a day cheering on their favourite team. If you’ve always wanted a cool ski holiday but couldn’t quite gather the funds then check out the Southampton Alpine Centre and discover your hidden talents for snowboarding, skiing or snowblading (the type with shorter skis). For swimmers the city has three big pools to choose from, or for the more outdoorsy types check out the Southampton Water Activities Centre and get involved in some refreshing water sports!

Southampton’s shopping scene is a pleasant surprise for newcomers; shopaholics will be able to feed their addictions without breaking the bank! The WestQuay Mall is a modern and stylish complex which houses all the best high street stores, as well as giving shoppers oodles of choice in places to chill at after a hard day of browsing. Marlands Mall is another key location in the city, located right on the high street (where you’ll find more places to shop) and offering a selection of independent and high street stores, plus a varied food court. On a smaller scale (and with their own exclusive student discount card) is Bargate Shopping Centre, home to specialist and independent shops coated in a buzzing market vibe. Speaking of, Southampton offers fantastic continental markets on weekends where you’ll find all things unique – from funky accessories to delicious delicacies; you’re sure to come away with a big smile on your face and even bigger shopping bags!

There’s something on every single night of the week in Southampton; a rarity for any city that isn’t London! Junk is a wicked club, throwing down on various nights and blasting all the best in Techno, Electro and Dubstep. Bliss is another popular venue, probably due to the fact that students can still afford food after a night out by taking advantage of their 2 for 1 drinks and free entry offers, ultimately making it one of the best clubbing experiences you’ll stumble across. For an exclusive night check out Buddha Lounge, a first-class venue playing all the latest R&B and Hip Hop, with some awesome House and Garage thrown in. You’ll find VIP treatment, clever drink offers and free entry – a terrific spot to start and finish your night!

After all that excitement, take yourself to one of Southampton’s beautiful parks and have a Zen moment before hitting the town again. The city isn’t too far from Bournemouth either, where you can get an ice cream and enjoy those rare sunny days on the beach!
