Leicester Guide For Students

Leicester and Leicestershire have three big universities. These Universities are major higher education providers in the United Kingdom. Leicester undoubtedly is a student friendly city with its three universities and many colleges.

The City of Leicester is a vibrant, exciting and diverse place to be a student. 300,000 people live in Leicester, making it one of the UK's largest cities.

Pubs and Clubs

Whether you want the latest dance music, independent artists or prefer to dress up in a seventies wig and flares you will find something in Leicester. Many of the clubs have special nights for enthusiasts of different types of music and 'student nights' during the week with reduced prices.

With over two hundred to choose from, Leicester's bars and pubs provide something for every individual.

Eating Out

Leicester is a multi-cultural city, and its cultural mix provides exciting opportunities to sample a huge variety of cuisines. The city excels in authentic Indian restaurants but also offers truly cosmopolitan dining, sometimes with live music. The range of cafes and restaurants in Leicester is extensive, but Leicester's greatest culinary strength is South Asian food - and we don't mean Chicken Tikka Masala - although you can get plenty of that. Exciting thalis, Indian sweets and delicious fresh samosas are just some of the cuisine on offer.

Shopping

Leicester is a city for individuals and this is reflected in its shopping. The big brand names can all be found in the city's two large indoor shopping centres - the Haymarket and the Shires Centre as well as the pedestrianised Gallowtree Gate. Leicester Market is open Monday to Saturday and has over 270 stalls. It has been on the site for 700 years and is the largest covered market in Europe.

Social Life

Your first year at university is probably the best year you’ll experience - it’s a non-stop rollercoaster of parties, friends, lectures, nightclubs, pub crawls and just a few hangovers!

Your student life in Leicester will be full of learning, fun and meeting different people from different cultures and races. As a student, in your spare time there will always be something to occupy you. Leicester is a city that likes to celebrate and Leicester's cosmopolitan character means that there is something grand happening in the city at most times of the year.

With warm weather, outdoor events become a feature of city life. The Belgrave Mela, an Asian carnival, runs over two days in June. Abbey Park is the setting for a music festival, a motor pageant and the City of Leicester Show, featuring top personalities and a wealth of attractions. Town Hall Square has its own programme of entertainments, and there is the living history festival based around Castle Park.

The Leicester International Music Festival in June brings world class musicians and offers 10 days of classical concerts and jazz.

The city's Diwali (Hindu Festival of Light) celebration in October is the country's largest and best and a must for every student to experience. You can be sure of an even warmer welcome than ever in the restaurants and shops of Belgrave and Melton Road, and the opportunity to see some wonderful performances of Indian dance.

Leicester is the ultimate student city in the United Kingdom.
