What's it like living in Manchester?

Manchester is an incredible place to live and study, no other city offers students so much in terms of nightlife, culture or attractions. “Sophisticated but homely, cosmopolitan but northern, you cannot deny Manchester’s buzz or its unparalleled music and club scene.” Education Guardian

From a former industrial centre to a dynamic innovator of the present, Manchester has three universities within its central area as well as Salford University located within the city borough; consequently, Manchester’s student population is one of the largest in Europe adding to both the city’s economy and the buzz of the Manchester nightlife.

The laid-back attitude of all the city’s pubs and bars is one its greatest assets. And the fact that they love students helps too! We wouldn’t like to suggest that students spend more time socialising than studying, but there’s no denying that a significant part of student life is spent down the pub. If you live in Manchester that’s good news because beer is cheaper here than anywhere else in the country!

Manchester’s vibrant music scene is a major pull for any student thinking of coming to study here, not only does it kick at the weekends but also weekdays, see a variety of gigs, live jam sessions and club nights. Take in the full spectrum of sounds from the urban beats of Hip-Hop, Garage and R&B, through to Indie. Limitless choice provides limitless nights of fun in the city.

Sports facilities are excellent in Manchester, partly as a legacy of the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Not only has the Stadium been turned into Manchester City’s new home ground, all the other facilities left as a legacy from the Commonwealth games are now up and running for all local residents use.

To get away from it all is easy, the Pennines are only 30 minutes away, and both the Lake District and the mountains of North Wales are barely an hour away.

Ian Brown of local legends the Stone Roses and a proud Mancunian, famously said ‘Manchester’s got everything except a beach...’ and he was right.
