University of Cambridge Taster Day

Are any of you keen to study at the University of Cambridge?

GEEMA, the university’s Group to Encourage Ethnic Minority Applications is taking bookings for the Year 12 TASTER DAY on March 31. The day will feature talks on life at Cambridge, advice about the interview process and tutor-led sessions on different subject areas.

Places are available for state school students from all over the UK. The event is free to attend, but students will need to cover their own transport costs.

More than 15% of the university’s home students class themselves as Black Minority Ethnic (BME). Mark Copestake, GEEMA Coordinator, said: “There's a lot of value in getting a chance to see Cambridge up close and ask questions about life here from people who really know. Many applicants won’t know much about the city of Cambridge and the taster day will give them a feel for where they may be living and socialising for three or four years.”

Nearly 200 students attended a taster day last year. Sacha Chopra was part of a school group from Hounslow in Middlesex who attended and said: “University websites are great for getting information, but there’s no substitute for visiting a place.

“Cambridge is very different to the area of London we come from. I love the dynamic of the whole place with bikes whizzing around rather than cars and the real feeling of community.”

Careers advisers or teachers can book for a group of up to 20 students. Alternatively, students can make group bookings. Individual student bookings can also be made. Bookings close on Friday March 26 2010.
