National Grid Transco (NGT) is the largest utility company in Great Britain and every hour of every day, the company operates and manages over 7,000 kilometres of the country's electricity networks and more than 170,000 kilometres of gas networks. NGT's networks carry electricity from power stations to the smaller local networks and gas from beach terminals and storage sites to homes and businesses. The company also balances the power on a 24/7 basis ‑ making sure there is enough to meet demand.
None of this could be possible without the people who work so hard for the company. More and more money will soon be spent on upgrading our networks ‑ and we need committed people to help us do that.
NGT is proud of its advanced apprenticeship programme. Over 70 apprentices are recruited every year, and the scheme gives school leavers opportunities across our transmission and distribution businesses, applicable to a range of engineering based roles. National Grid Transco is a world leader in its field and needs quality people to continue delivering energy safely and reliably.
Lucry Nicholls joined our Instrumentation & Electrical Team as an Apprentice In October 1999. The highlight of her Apprenticeship has been winning the 'Second Year Craft Apprentice of the Year' award.
I worked in a dead end job after college and sat in the same place every day. I did not want to go to work in the mornings and needed a change. I searched through job adverts in my local papers and applied for six different apprenticeship opportunities. I was lucky and got offered two, and chose the one with National Grid Transco. I enjoy going to work in the mornings now and am never stuck in an office and Instead get to work on different sites wIth a number of different people.
It was difficult at the start, especially wIth working in a predominantly male environment. The thing is not take anything too personally, go with the flow and have fun on the job. I always ask for help with anything that I find to be a challenge, "Be open and honest and it will hold you in good stead. People prefer to help you rather than to have you mess it up."
Get energised ‑ choose a National Grid Transco apprenticeship scheme!
