We know university is not for everyone but gaining a business qualification is important to many. At BDO Stoy Hayward, the UK part of the world’s fifth largest accountancy firm, we’re offering the opportunity to train for full professional accountancy qualifications.

Our trainees spend their first year developing personal skills and learning about the firm’s two main area’s of work - Business Assurance and Tax, through a mix of training and work experience. The purpose of this year is for trainees to familiarise themselves and be exposed to both streams which will enable them to decide on the stream they would prefer to specialise in year two. In year two, trainees then begin working towards their chosen accountancy qualification – ACA* or CTA**.

Gemma joined the Commercial Trainee Scheme in Sept 2004. ‘I did go to university for about six months, but it wasn’t for me. I considered a number of different A level training positions. Of all the programmes which I considered, the scheme offered by BDO Stoy Hayward stood out the most. It was different in that during the first year you are not expected to take any exams. A year’s exposure to both business assurance and tax has widened my business knowledge and helped me be sure about which professional exams will be best for me. The Commercial Trainee Scheme has proven to be a very good grounding in a well-regarded career for me.

There have been many highlights, the main one is that although those of us on the scheme are quite a bit younger than the graduates who joined at the same time, we are treated as equals – we are given the same tasks and as of next year, we’ll be doing the same exams. I’m really enjoying the scheme.’
