We all know that when it comes to choosing a university, there are many things to consider not least the quality of degree and the facilities on offer. But arguably the most important issue on your mind should be what happens when you leave university - will you get a job?

Today, like never before, employability is a hot issue for universities and prospective students alike. It is front of mind and many claims are being made about the success of different universities in this arena. For example, at Aberdeen Business School which is part of The Robert Gordon University, the figures reveal that in 2004 a very impressive 98.1% of graduates were in employment or further study six months after graduation.

According to The Times Good University Guide 2004 that figure places RGU top in Scotland and second only to Cambridge in the UK. Welcoming these latest results, Professor Bill Stevely, Principal and Vice Chancellor of RGU, commented: “While we are always cautious about reading too much into league tables our graduate employment record is something that we take great pride in. It is one of RGU’s strengths that we produce graduates with the blend of skills that employers across the UK want.”

Of course, when dealing with any such statistics it is always advisable to be cautious and to check just how rigorous such claims really are. Do they really stack up? For example, the one question you should ask every university that makes claims about employability is ‘what kind of jobs are your graduates actually getting?’.

Answering that question for us is Christine Buchanan, Head of RGU’s Career Advisory Service, who said, “What is particularly pleasing is that our graduates are getting good quality jobs. For students graduating with their first degree and currently in employment, 87% of RGU graduates are in traditional graduate occupational sectors.”

This kind of success – complemented by the impressive facilities and the quality of degree on offer – help to explain why more new students are now choosing to do a first degree at Aberdeen Business School.
