A chemist is a scientist trained in the study of chemistry. Chemists study the composition of matter and its properties such as density and acidity and the way chemicals interact with each other. Chemists search for new information about matter and ways this information can be applied. They also design and are involved in development of instruments to study matter.
The career options for a chemist are broad with many different employment opportunities. Some chemists work in a lab, in research environments, asking questions and testing hypotheses with experiments. Other chemists may work on a computer developing theories or models or predicting reactions. Some chemists may be involved in field work. Others contribute advice on chemistry for projects, they be involved in teaching or writing.
Salaries can range from around £15,000 to £65,000 a year or more.
